CADR Ratings: Is it a Good Measure of Air Purifier Quality?

May 15, 2021 by john

I have had many calls and emails asking me about CADR Air Purifier Ratings. What it means, and whether it is a good way to measure air purifier quality. Especially when they find companies that do not use it.

Here is my experience…

What are CADR Ratings

Would you like a reliable way to compare one air purifier to another? The AHAM CADR rating is one method used by some air purifier manufacturers to promote the value of their products.

But what is this CADR air purifier rating? Is it a reliable means to compare air purifiers? If so, why do so many top-quality air purifier manufacturers not bother to get their units rated?

CADR, short for Clean Air Delivery Rate. Developed by the Association of Home Appliance Manufacturers (AHAM) as a means of providing air purifier ratings to consumers.

Basically, CADR is a measure of an air purifier’s ability to produce pollutant-free air.

The CADR measures a certain number of cubic feet per minute. That is, the CADR essentially states the volume of clean air a portable air cleaner can produce at one time. For example, suppose a particular model has a CADR of 250 for dust. That means the unit can reduce dust particle concentration equivalent to adding 250 cubic feet per minute of dust-free air.

The manufacturers in this association are the very ones who determine what to test, how it will test, and what is a good performance. They decide by a negotiated mutual agreement among the associated manufacturers.

Obviously, the air purifier manufacturers have a vested interest in creating a test their products will perform well in. Unfortunately, this conflict of interest has created a test with severe limitations.

Many air purifier companies actively market their cleaners based predominately on this rating which stands for “Clean Air Delivery Rate”. It is a measure of air flow, not air purity. Therefore, other companies will skip this CADR Air Purifier Ratings altogether. Because it does not address some technologies critical to cleaning and purifying the air. CADR is associated with air flow alone, make its numbers, at best, Irrelevant and at worse, Misleading.

Why is it misleading to compare air purifiers by CADR numbers?

Most units only state three CADR numbers: one for smoke, another for dust, and a final one for pollen, which are the largest of all particles.

The number means much the same thing in each case. It still refers to the ability to reduce that material’s concentration by a certain amount in each time. It’s just that virtually all units can do that differently for the different kinds of home air pollutant. So the manufacturers state different ratings for each category. There are lots of reasons for that: particle size and weight, filter efficiency which differs from one type to another, and more.

One of the reasons home air purifier makers go to the trouble of measuring and reporting those three different numbers. Is that they are (almost) all members of the AHAM, the Association of Home Appliance Manufacturers.

That organization certifies that the numbers that air purifier makers report are accurate and honest. They use an independent, 3rd party lab to test the devices and verify the numbers reported.

Of course, “honest” is a little bit of a relative term here. No major manufacturer tries to deliberately misreport their numbers. That would threaten their membership in the AHAM and result in bad publicity, something none of them wants. But there are various ways they can report those numbers that can differ from one device to the next.

How to Easily Manipulate CARD Numbers

The fact is, if a manufacturer wanted to market their purifier just according to the CADR numbers. They can simply ‘beef up’ the fan speed, eliminate certain technologies and just manufacture the same limited filtration systems most companies use. For example, if you pull air too quickly through the unit to artificially inflate your CADR numbers. Any UV technology that protects you and your family from harmful germs and viruses. That traditional air purifiers miss, might negate any effects of killing germs and viruses.

CADR Air Purifier Ratings Do Not Factor Germs, Bacteria, Mold, Mildew, Fumes, Odors, etc.

The CADR is basically only a measure of how rapidly air circulates through a given air filtering device. While this figure is perhaps relevant for most filtration-only devices that attempt to clean air using only one or two types of filters. It is meaningless because filtration is simply one single aspect. The fact is that the CADR number tells you nothing about how well, or even “IF”, an air purifier filters germs, bacteria, viruses and other harmful biological agents. Neither does it assess how well the unit clears chemical fumes and odors.

The easiest way to think of it is that, even though everyone in the industry refers to their products as an air “purifier”. The fact is that most competing products out there are simply air “filters” that do not use anywhere near the number of additional “purification” technologies available, e.g., UV light, TiO2, activated charcoal, negative ionization, etc.

Ways of Reporting CADR

Two different home air purifier makers may have units with identical CADR numbers but still be quite different in their ultimate effects.

The key to using CADR numbers to compare models accurately lies in two things: (1) take them as approximate, (2) look closely at what is behind them. The first is obvious, but what does (2) mean?

Simple, just get the context around that number. Look for the number of air exchanges per hour, and the specific room characteristics assumed by the CADR. The AHAM gives manufacturers a little leeway here.

A stated CADR references a ‘standard’ room. Ensure that your room is ‘standard’. That is, the standard used for CADR’s assumes an 8-foot-high ceiling because the ordinary home has (or had for many years in the U.S. after WWII) a ceiling that high.

As the years have rolled on, more and more home designs deviated from that, so adjust accordingly. If your home has a cathedral ceiling, an open area that leads up to a second floor, or other deviation from ‘the norm’ look for a home air purifier with a larger number to compensate.

In brief, don’t assume that because your floor area square footage is the same or even smaller. Than what the model specifies that the device will purify your room air totally. The device operates, after all, on the total volume, not just the air from your head on down.

It’s a good idea to follow the AHAM’s “2/3 Rule” but modified. What’s that?

The (Modified) 2/3 Rule

Suppose you have a room measuring 10′ x 12′ (120 square feet) whose air you want to purify and keep smoke-free. You should look for a home air purifier with a Smoke CADR number of at least 80. (120 x 2/3 = 80).

The CADR test on the air purifier only use the highest setting. Since your home unit will typically run at the middle speed/power most of the time. The CADR obtained by the 2/3 Rule is the bare minimum and you should add about 30% to get a ‘floor’ on the CADR number.

So, start with 120 x 2/3 (the 2/3 rule) = 80. ADD 1/3 to that, so: 80 + (80 x 1/3) = 107 (approx).

That calculation assumes an 8-foot ceiling. So naturally if you have one that’s higher or not flat, open to another story, etc. multiply accordingly. It would be too complicated to detail here what is “accordingly” for the general case, so just approximate your situation.

For example, if you have a 12-foot sloping ceiling, add about another 30% to the number. So, for this case, that number becomes: 80 + (80 x 1/3) + (80 x 1/3) = 133 (approx).

CADR Helpful but Not the Only Factor to Consider

CADR numbers, helpful as they are as a starting point. They are not the only important feature for ensuring a good air purifier model as the ratings don’t capture some especially useful information.

For example, because the AHAM tests are short they don’t tell you how the air purifier will perform over the long haul. They also don’t encapsulate how well the air cleaner captures small particles. Which are often the most damaging to health nor do they tell you how well a model removes VOCs (Volatile Organic Compounds), which can be unpleasant or even unhealthy.

So, the moral is: use the CADR as a starting point but look also to other features of any home air purifier you’re considering before you make a final choice.

To start on the process the AHAM maintains a searchable Directory of Certified Room Air Cleaners.

Include link – https://www.ahamdir.com/room-air-cleaners/

The size of these pollutants is quite large in comparison with other particles found in the air. Over 90% of all airborne particles in our homes and offices are smaller and include viruses, bacteria and mold.

CADR air purifier comparisons provide no indication of a filters efficiency at removing these smallest of all particles. These are the  the ones that purifiers are generally the least efficient at removing. This test also does not measure gas and odor reduction. Since most people buy air cleaners for these purposes, this standard is of no real value to consumers.

Longer-term tests clearly show that collector plate loading by contaminants can reduce efficiency to less than 20%. This can have a severe impact on Clean Air Delivery Rate that would not show up in the CADR testing. Failure to provide consumers with this critical information prevents them from understanding how important it is to follow use and care directions routinely.

The top four reasons the AHAM CADR rating is unreliable

  1. The rating test performed by CADR is not a strict, definitive test. It fails to address the majority of lung damaging airborne particles.
  2. The test just measures the elimination of the particles. Even ionizers rate well. The well-documented ineffective filtration and dangers of ionizer air purifiers is a good indication that this test is questionable.
  3. The test does not measure the performance of the elimination of gas and odors. Although many people buy air cleaners for this purpose.
  4. The major downfall with the test is that it does not measure long-term performance. The values in CADR air purifier comparisons represent performance during the first 72 hours of use. Air cleaning system generally run for 5000 hours before you replace the filter. The performance over this span will often be drastically lower and depends to a significant degree on the construction of the air cleaner and the air cleaning technology.

Based on these concerns CADR air purifier comparisons are questionable and fail to really serve the best interests of consumers. The manufacturers of the world’s best air purifiers universally ignore this test. Submitting to it would seem to grant it an air of credibility while failing to really prove the superiority of the air purifiers they have to offer you.

A better standard than the AHAM CADR rating is available

A superior testing method to the AHAM CADR rating went into effect in 2000. This determines HEPA efficiencies in the smallest of particles over extended use. It determines air purifier effectiveness under a worst-case scenario.

It is known as EN1822 (European Norm 1822).

Link – https://www.en-standard.eu/set-en-1822-and-en-iso-29463-standards-for-heigh-efficiency-air-filters-epa-hepa-and-ulpa/

The EN 1822 standard tests air purifier effectiveness over a broad range of particle sizes. This determines the particle size the filter is the worst at removing, known as the Most Penetrating Particle Size (MPPS for short). These particles then test the filters efficiency at air speeds that reflect actual use conditions.

Since this gives the absolute worst-case scenario performance measure, there is assurance of real-world performance in their own homes.

CADR Conclusions

CADR will give you some idea of how the air flows across your HEPA filter, but that is about it. It will not give you any idea of the purifier’s effectiveness in eliminating odor, gas, viruses, bacteria, etc.

Air Purifiers Effectiveness

Air Purifiers Effectiveness

by Mary Louise Harrelson (Stamford, CT.)

Q; How can we measure an air purifiers effectiveness? I have an allergy air purifier now (or allegedly it is!!) and I don’t notice a difference in my allergies.

A: I’ll give you several easy practical things and then more technical (or expensive) solutions. I’m not sure what allergies you have and that will determine an air purifiers effectiveness.

Here’s a list of tests:

Tests you can do yourself:

Check the HEPA filter, or inside of the air purifier

Check the pre-filter

Clean off the electrostatic grid

Purchase a particle tester

In home tests for radon, mold, etc.

Professional Tests:

Particle tester – for small and large particles

Gas discharge meter. Co2, Carbon Monoxide, Radon tests, etc.

HEPA Air Purifier Effectiveness

If you’re allergic to dust, pollen or dander then I hope you’re starting with a HEPA filter (which I’ll assume you have because it is the first choice for allergies to dust, dander and pollen). If it is HEPA then the filter should be showing dust, dirt, etc. If you haven’t changed it for awhile that could severely affect whether it is working or not.

To get a better idea of a HEPA filters effectiveness (or any air purifiers effectiveness for that matter) then a Particle Tester is the best way to test for its effectiveness. A particle tester determines how many particles, both large and small, are in the air. On this website I have done particle tests on all the major brands

Electrostatic Air Purifiers Effectiveness

If you have an Oreck air purifier, an ” electronic air purifier “, an ” ionizer” or similar named units then you are using electrostatic to clean the air. On the particle tests for these unts you’ll find that they do not remove all the dust pollen or dander from the air. They’ll remove some of the dust, just not most of it. While inexpensive to maintain (washable) it works primarily on smoke, odor, and pollution ( car, truck, industrial pollution, etc.).

The particle tester shows the ineffectiveness of electrostatic for pollen and dust. If it’s an allergy to smoke, odor, etc. then the way to test the effectiveness is in the lab, or with a gas, Co2, or other meter which can measure gases.

Mold, Mildew Air Purifiers Effectiveness

For mold or mildew then you’ll want UV , negative ion or ozone generators. I recommend ozone to “treat” the room and not for everyday use since Ozone can harm or damage the lungs. Of course the mildew smell should go away and any visual mold or mildew should be gone too. if it is in the carpets or walls however then the air purifiers effectiveness will not be enough to remove these problems by itself. most likely you will have to have the walls, sheetrock, carpeting, etc. removed completely.

If you need more help please contact me and ask your questions.

40 Years of Top Air Purifier Tests and Reviews

My name is Mark Richardson, and I entered the Health Field because I had life-threatening allergies and asthma as a very young child. My struggles started a burning desire to find answers to better health. Along with air purifiers I studied herbs, nutrition, and natural treatments with some of todays top Health Practitioners. I eventually went back to school for a degree in Health (although the real learning happened by thousands of dollars in what seemed like “trial and error” methods).

I no longer have asthma and allergies and one of my tools was finding the right air purifier technology to help me. You can read my complete story of overcoming allergies and asthma here. It will also provide my background and experience from the air purifier industry.

Since I began my research in 1970 I have witnessed and warned people about:

* Air Purifiers that can actually harm your lungs

* Top Brand Air Purifiers that falsely claim to help allergies

* Falsified Air Purifier Tests

* Overpriced Replacement HEPA filters

* Air Purifier Warranties that sound good but COST you money

I have done comparative particle tests, decibel tests, as well as mold and germ tests on the current air purifier technologies.

I have owned hundreds of air purifiers myself, and I have spent time with some of the best Scientists, Technicians and manufacturers in China where most of today’s models are made.

Most people have wasted their money on TV infomercial air purifiers. Others have bought overpriced MLM machines from friends. Worst of all most purifiers bought fail to remove small particles and gases that could help environmentally sensitive people.

Am I an Unbiased Air Purifier Expert

Yes and no. I am biased against people getting the wrong air purifier for their needs and/or people spending too much money on the wrong air purifier. I know what it’s like to have allergies, and waste money on my health. I have promoted air purifiers that I thought would help people, and I’ve turned down promoting major brands I didn’t like. I often recommended other air purifiers to people without any financial interest in doing so.

Just like infomercial hype most online information is based on advertising and marketing. Many models sold today are 20 years old in their design, simply because most people don’t know any better.

To that end I finally decided to put together my years of expertise, personal experience, and that of my friends in the Health Field and in Engineering to provide you with the…

4 Steps: How To Choose The Right Air Purifier

A few years back I wrote a comprehensive book about Air Purifiers entitled the “Consumers Guide To Air Purifiers”. The book includes Video Reviews, Comparison Charts, and Money Saving Coupons. In it I also share my story – how I overcome allergies and asthma.

What most people commented on as the most helpful part of the book was the simple 4-step process which helped them choose the right Air Purifier:

STEP 1 – Learn The 10 Air Purifier Technologies – to determine which technologies are needed to solve your problem.

STEP 2 – Determine Your Square Footage – by understanding how doorways, high ceilings, and asthma affect your square footage number. This will help you avoid purchasing an air purifier that is too large, or small, to do the job.

STEP 3 – View A Current Comparison Chart to analyze which top models can match the technologies and square footage criteria that you learned in Step 1 & 2. (The comparison chart also saves you money by allowing you to compare replacement filter costs, warranties, and retail prices).

STEP 4 – Watch Video Reviews And Read My Reviews – to finalize and narrow your choice.

“This book should be called “Everything You Need to Know About Air Purifiers”. It’s a lot more than your average consumers guide. Richardson’s vast knowledge base and personal testing experience in the field is unparalleled and his ability to condense information and make it understandable for the average reader is a pleasant surprise. If you’re interested in air purifiers, you’ll learn very quickly that this information is worth a lot more than it’s sold for. For me the categorizing of technologies with the symptoms they deal with was most helpful. Now I know what to use for my allergies, and sensitivities to mold! Now I know how to get the most effective, cheapest, (and cheapest to maintain) air purifier. THANK YOU!”

Discover Which Air Purifier Has The Technology To Solve Your Problem – And Start Breathing Better!

STEP #1: Review the 10 Technologies

People ask me all the time: “Mark, which is the best air purifier?” My answer: “The one with the filters that match your needs.” Of course most can’t name all 10 technologies, and how each one can (or won’t) help them.

So before you start your air purifier comparison online let me ask you these questions:

1) “What are the ten available technologies?” and

2)”Which ones will help your problem?”

STEP #2: Estimate Square Footage

The second step involves the next bit of information needed when comparing air purifiers.:

1) Square ft.

2) Also how manufacturers determine square footage. The first part is fairly easy – measuring the room’s length and width and multiply. If you have high ceilings add more feet onto your estimated square footage. Most air purifier square footage (as you’ll find on the spec sheets for all models reviewed on this site) is based on 7 foot ceilings. For 10 foot ceilings add about 25%, Cathedral ceilings 30-40%.

Most air purifier manufacturers tend to exaggerate square footage so allow for that when comparing air purifiers. Some technology (like HEPA) requires that the air goes through the machine. Other technologies (negative ions, or Ozone) does it’s work outside the machine in the room, which allows manufacturers to increase/exaggerate the numbers more easily. Most numbers are based on cleaning the air in the room once per hour.

For allergies/asthma you’ll want to clean the air 2x more an hour for effective allergy relief or prevention.

STEP #3: Review the Comparison Chart

Knowing the technologies you require (step 1) and the square footage (step #2) go back to the comparison chart to choose several models that fit your criteria.

More considerations:

1) Choose 3-4 models on the chart that fit your technology and square footage needs.

2) Be careful of replacement filter costs. In my opinion most manufacturers overcharge for their replacement filters.

3) When comparing air purifiers review the warranty policy. Often warranties that sound good initially have hidden costs (EX: pro-rated policies often make the company more money).

STEP #4: Watch The Video Reviews

Now that you’ve reviewed the comparison chart On the left menu you’ll find thorough written and video reviews, including particle tests, of most major air purifiers.

Home Air Purifier Allergy Reviews

April 4, 2021 by john

Overview

How do you determine the best home air purifier allergy machine? It all depends on:

“Which kind of allergies do you have?”

That’s because different allergies call for different technologies:

Pollen Allergies- HEPA air filters are the first choice because they actually catch and hold the pollen. Allergists recommend HEPA above all others.

Pet Allergies – For animal dander HEPA is also the first choice. If you have cats and dogs a washable “pre-filter” is also a good idea because it catches animal hair and extends the life of the HEPA filter.

Mold Allergy- To kill mold you’ll need something that actually kills the mold. Negative ion and Ozone are best because they actually go out into the room to kill mold. Despite claims that HEPA helps with mold it does not kill mold, it only catches mold spores.

Dust Allergies- HEPA again is best to catch particles like dust.

Mildew Allergies- Negative ion and/or ozone kill mildew.

Smoke Allergy- Here’s where carbon, electrostatic and/or ionization can be an affordable way to reduce smoke. These technologies are less expensive than HEPA.

Chemical Allergies- If you are chemically sensitive to chemicals then carbon or zeolite is the ideal technology. That’s because carbon and zeolite will absorb the chemicals. Hepa will not, Uv will not, nor will electrostatic (although it can sometimes disable some of the gases in the air).

Ideal Home Air Purifier Allergy Machine

There’s one other thing to consider: people with allergies almost always have compromised immune systems. So, for example, if you’re allergic to pollen it would be a good idea to also prevent mold and chemical fumes since this would contribute to supporting your immune system. So the best air purifier for your allergies will be one that uses several available technologies.

Best Air Purifiers – Which is Best For You

April 4, 2021 by john

Overview

I’ll start by saying that the ” Best Air Purifiers ” (according to any online reviews) have only a 99% chance of being the wrong air purifier for you.

Here’s why:

1 – There are 10 technologies. Do you know them? Do you know which ones fit your needs?

2 – Most air purifiers only use 2-3 technologies and choose incorrectly.

3 – Most manufacturers overcharge for replacement filters so consumers end up spending too much.

4 – The size of the room (square footage) will determine which air purifier is best and since all air purifiers are different – most people choose one that is too big or small.

Finding The Best Air Purifiers For YOU!

A better approach is to take the following four steps:

1 – Watch Part 1 of the Video below: 10 Technologies Explained

2 – Then watch Part 2: How to Determine Square Footage3 – Review the Comparison Chart (via the left menu) to match several models against your chosen technologies and square footage

4 – Watch the Video Reviews on the site of each chosen model, read the specification sheets, and pro’s and con’s of each model

5 – Make an informed decision

Complete Guide to Air Purifiers

Comparisons and Reviews

By now you should know which of the 10 air purifier technologies you want in your machine, and the proper square footage to cover. Now the Comparison chart (SEE LINK BELOW OR LEFT MENU) will provide you with enough choices to match your needs and square footage.

I’ve included replacement filter costs and warranty information which can be important in terms of operating costs and long term reliability. Filters should not cost over 80 (no matter how big) and Warranties should be a minimum of 3-4 years, ideally five.

Once you have several potential matches then the video reviews should help you determine the best for your needs.  Good Luck!

Air Base Business Home Purifier Review

April 4, 2021 by john

Working At Home?

The right air base business home purifier can not only remove dust and pollen it can also increase your mental performance if it includes the right technologies.

In this article we’ll cover the best choices for your office for cleaning and for performance. I’ll also make some recommendations for both a small office and large room air base business home purifier as well.

Negative Ions: Increasing Mental Clarity and Energy

Ever wonder why many people get answers to problems in the shower. A hot shower produces lots of negative ions which improves brain function. Negative ions are naturally occurring in nature, in fact without them we would die. High concentrations of negative ions are found around moving water (oceans, rivers, and showers) and in the wilderness. On the other hand levels indoors and in cities are very low.

Much of the research on negative ions was done in Russia and Europe which confirmed improvements in energy levels in the body and brain. Negative ionizers are also used to improve breathing problems like asthma.

For these benefits I have a small “negative ionizer” to my office which has increased my mental clarity and endurance for work. The one I have is a small plugin model which looks a lot like a little plugin air freshener. I also have one in my bedroom – because it helps me feel more refreshed in the morning.

HEPA: Best For Pollen and Dust

For effectively removing and gathering dust or pollen your home purifier must include a HEPA filter. HEPA is a cloth-like filter which holds the particles in the air when it passes through.

Conclusion

To effectively clean the air in your office at home, and increase your mental performance, make sure you include both HEPA filters and negative ions in the air purifier you choose.

Below is a video of a small air purifier which includes HEPA and negative ipns. It will cover small office spaces.

Honeywell 2ccleaner Air Hepa Purifier

April 4, 2021 by john

Overview

If you are dealing with allergies then a Honeywell 2ccleaner air hepa purifier is best for dust and pollen. However HEPA air purifiers and their filters are often overpriced.

SHE OVERPAID…

Joan called me one day and said she bought a air hepa purifier for . She asked me how I felt about it.

“It’s a good value, but did you look at the HEPA filter replacement costs?”

Joan replied “No”.

“A HEPA filter has to be replaced usually every 4-6 months. Are you sititng down?”.

“Yes”.

“The cost of the filter is 120 bucks. So this will cost you about 250 a year to operate!”

I’ve seen this s happen all the time.

Why So Expensive?

It’s not manufacturing the filter that costs money – they are inexpensive to make. It’s simply a matter of greed. Some companies make most of their money on replacement HEPA filters, and consumers can often spend more for filters within 2 years than they did for the purifier itself.

Once you’ve bought an air purifier (The honeywell 2ccleaner air hepa purifier is not the only overpriced one) then when it comes down to replacing the filter you’re stuck either 1) finding one on sale 2) paying full price or 3) selling it and buying one with less expensive replacement filters.

Where The Air Purifier Money Is

Air Purifier Makers figured out what computer printer makers knew a long time ago. The money is not in the original purchase but in the backend purchases. This also true for automakers.A small ink (or laser) cartridge for 30-80 cost about 2.00 to make. Auto tuneups for 200.00 (parts) cost on average 42.00.

HEPA filters can cost the manufacturer on average 5.75 and are sold for 50-70.

Do Ionic Air Purifiers Work For Asthma

April 4, 2021 by john

I started using ionic air purifiers in the 1960’s for asthma and allergies. So do ionic air purifiers work for asthma? NOPE. I wanted help with asthma and allergies to cats, dogs, dust and pollen. In fact it brought on an asthma attack. I’ll explain why shortly.

It was in the 1990’s that the Sharper Image model (an ionic air purifier) was finally removed from TV for the very reason that caused my asthma attack.

Do Ionic Air Purifiers Work For Allergies ?

NOPE! Well maybe I would more truthfully say it will help with allergies to smoke and odors. It will not be effective in helping dust or pollen.

The plates use positive and negative charges to attract pollutants. They just don’t work well since most dust and pollen does not have very much electrical charge. The static electricity effect from the plates (which also creates the zapping noise in the Oreck air purifier, often complained about) will attract a little dust. Just not very much.

The Problem with Ionic Air Purifiers

The problem with some Ionizers is this:

The washable “plates” in ionic air purifiers can often create dangerous levels of ozone. This created confusion for consumers because most consumers don’t understand the difference between ions, ionizers and ozone.

Ionizers are different from ozone machines. While Ionizer plates aren’t made intentionally to create ozone some ionizers (because of their design) happen to create ozone.

What Do ionic Air Purifiers Work For?

Ionic air purifiers will help with smoke, pollution and odor. If you are a smoker, or have someone close by who smokes the ionic air purifier would be a good low-cost way to remove smoke. That’s because the washable plates would save you from having to replace HEPA filters.

The other scenario for ionic air purifiers is to remove car and truck fumes from inside your car or home.

Conclusion

An ionizer is different from ozone machines, but can create ozone. The fact that an ionizer doesn’t work particularly well for dust or pollen may be the reason to look at air purifiers that use HEPA instead.

Best Room Air Purifier – 3 Things To Consider

April 4, 2021 by john

Thousands of people have asked me: “What’s the best room air purifier?”

And I always respond with these 3 questions:

1) What’s your air problem? (IE: asthma, allergies, odor, mold, etc.)

2) Is it a small room or a large room? (Square footage)

3) And how much do you want to spend?

That’s because there are 10 different types of purification and each does something different. What works for one problem won’t work on others. An example would be an ionic air purifier (good for smoke and odor) when you have allergies to pollen which would require a HEPA air purifier. And because each air purifier covers a different square footage you don’t want one too small or too big. You can also pay too much for a unit that has expensive replacement filters.

When the Best is Not The Best

Many sites may claim having the ” best room air purifier ” but often it’s not the “Best” for your needs. Each room is different.

By following the video instructions below you’ll be able to narrow your search and determine the best match for your needs.

STEP 1: Learn the 10 Technologies

The video below explains the 10 technologies…

STEP 2: Square Footage Problems

High Ceilings and furniture does affect square footage (as is listed on most air purifier boxes). Most square footage is based on 7-8 foot ceilings, and is based on an empty room. Allow for this in your calculations.

I often receive emails and phone calls about small room air purifiers as well. Yes, many air purifiers are simply too big for, let’s say a 10 x 12 room. That’s only 120 square feet.

Informed Comparisons

Now that you have a list of technologies you want, and the square footage, you might want to view the comparison chart (see link below) and watch some of the video and written reviews on this site for the air purifier that fits your needs.

Ionic Wind Air Purifier Review

April 4, 2021 by john

Viatek’s Ionic Wind Air Purifier Cleaner (with Night Light) is a small simple ionizer. There are several good things about using an inexpenisve plug-in like this, and several downsides to them as well.

I’ll start by explaining what a negative ionizer is, an “ionic” machine, and then we’ll cover the pros and cons. I started buying negative ionizers and ionizers like this as a young boy because of their reported benefits for asthma.

Viatek cleverly gave this model a name very close to “ionic Breeze Air Purifier” model which was highly popular before it ran into problems when it created ozone. In fact you can think of it as a midget ionic breeze air purifier.

What Are Ions & Ionizers ?

If you watched the video above then you now know that negative ions, ionizers, ionic, and ozone can all mean completely different things. Most “ionic” (almost the same as electrostatic) machines – including the Oreck xl air purifier and the ionic breeze – use positive and negatively charged plates to clean the air.

Follow the link below (click on the image) to read the reviews on this model:

How It Works

The Ionic Wind Air Purifier is a “plug in” air purifier that collects some airborne particles with its electrostatic cleaning technology. This simply means that it has charged plates to attract positive and negatively charged pollutants.

It has a two speed little fan that pulls the air in past the electrostatic stainless steel grid. It has a slide out stainless steel grid (plates) that is easy to clean. Just wipe the grid once a week. I’m not sure if it is washable but if you wash it make sure you let it dry first to prevent shocks.

Features and Specs

The Ionic Wind Air Purifier Claims to:

* Reduces Pet Odors, Kitchen Odors, Smoke

* Cleans the air while you sleep

* Slide out stainless steel grid for easy cleaning

* Simply rinse or wipe clean – No filters to replace ever!

* Soft Glow LED Nightlight

Conclusion

Something this small is probably good for a bathroom to keep odors down. I’m not sure if it produces any ozone but that would be my main reservation.

For 10 dollars it would take some of the pollution and odor out of your home.

Ozone Air Filter Dangers

April 4, 2021 by john

Overview

HEPA or OZONE? An Ozone Air Filter is really not a filter at all. And Ozone is just 1 of the 10 air purifier technologies available. Besides explaining the differences between them we’ll also cover the limitations of each, and the dangers of Ozone.

For a complete explanation of the 10 technologies, what they do, and which to choose for your particular need, I suggest watching the video on the home page

10 Air Purifier Technologies

Ozone Pro’s and Con’s

Ozone is simply an oxygen molecule (called O2 = two particles) that has an additional, yet very unstable, surplus particle (now making it O3). This highly unstable particle can be created by electrical charge. This can happen from lightning, or by electrical charge. With an Ozone air filter or purifier the machine produces more of these unstable particles.

It’s the instability of that third “wheel” that makes it effective for mold, mildew, smoke, and odors. Unfortunately the instability can also damage or irritate tissue in high amounts (see the video). Brand names heap ozone air filter machines include multi-level brands like Alpine, Ecoquest, and Vollara (all the same company and design) as well as a few Chinese air purifiers. These Ozone molecules go out into a room and kill odor, mold spores, smoke molecules, and other gases. They don’t work inside the machine itself. The fan in an ozone machine works to send the highly ozonated air out into the far corners of the room.

Ozone Dangers

In the video below you’ll see why the Ionic Breeze Air Purifier was removed from television and why even the Oreck Air Purifier may inadvertently create ozone. By the way they are both called electrostatic. Electrostatic can create ozone, even though it was not intended to.

Conclusion

Ozone should not be considered a good choice for allergies to pollen, pet hair, or dust. I also would not use it as my everyday air purifier because of the health risks. It might be considered useful for smokers, or large amounts of smoke, odor, or for mold/mildew conditions.

For myself, I have an old ozone generator in the closed which I use on occasion to “treat” a room (while I am not in it) from musty, mildewy smells or extreme odor problems.

Rainbow Air Purifier Review

April 4, 2021 by john

Overview

The Rainbow air purifier is an ozone based purifier which will eliminate mold, smoke, and odors. For mold I haven’t seen anything better. But if you have allergies or asthma I wouldn’t recommend this model. Ozone does little, or nothing, for pollen or dust by itself. Rainbow Air Purifiers are very similar to Ecoquest Ozone air purifiers except for appearance and construction. Of course the price is also half or more of the Ecoquest brand, probably because the Ecoquest is an MLM product.

Ozone will remove offensive odors caused by tobacco, smoke, urine, pets, mildew, diapers, formaldehyde and other chemical fumes. You might have to replace the ozone plates every 4-9 months. The cost is 50.

The dangers of Ozone to the lungs, and how ozone works, is covered in the video below.

The Dangers of Ozone Generators

Pros & Cons

Pro’s

1 – Great way to eliminate mold, smoke or odor

2 – Low maintenance costs

3 – Covers 750 sq. ft. or more (ozone goes out into the room)

Con’s

1 – Can damage/irritate sensitive lungs

2 – Won’t help remove much dust, pollen, or hair

3 – Won’t kill viruses or bacteria like UV
