Air Oasis Air Purifier Review

April 2, 2021 by john

Overview

I really hoping the Air Oasis Air Purifier Models had something unique and effective (I had my fingers crossed) because they are one of the only Made-in-the-USA products (as they claim). It does have something unique, but effectiveness will be challenged in this review.

I was excited by the idea of buying American. However on further review the claim reads: “it’s assembled in the US”. I’m not really sure it’s “made in the US” after some research on it. [Please correct me if you know for sure]

While there are several models available this review will focus on the technology (which is used across their models) in the Air Oasis 3000 G3 Residential Air Sanifier Purifier. The Air Oasis Air Purifier weighs in a mere 6 pounds, has no fan, yet claims that it can be more effective at time (emphasis on “at times”) than a HEPA filter. The two primary technologies it uses are reviewed in more detail below.

[Note: I am still in the process of doing a video review and receiving more info on whether the nickel nano technology has superior effects on viruses, germs, etc.]

Air Oasis Company

Dr. Jeff Bennert, co-owner of the Air Oasis Air Purifier Company, is a Naturopath, author and Practitioner. You’ll see references to his involvement with Coral Calcium and other nutritional products.

Stages of Purification

Now let’s take a look at the technology for cleaning the air. The air oasis air purifier has 2 stages

Stage 1 Nano nickel HCT PCO technology. Works to enhance UV, similar to nano titanium Dioxide. only works with UV-C. Enhances the UV effect on the air.

Stage 2 UV – C light. According to them a special treatment on the lamps enhances the life and function of the UV over regular UV light in other air purifiers.

Pro’s & Con’s

Pros

1 – Includes an advanced Nano Nickel process to enhance UV

2 – Includes UV-C for killing germs, viruses, mold, etc.

3 – Covers a large area

4 – No fan (which is a pro and a con) which saves electricity and makes it silent

Con’s

1 – A bit expensive

2 – I don’t recommend it for dust or pollen because it lacks HEPA

3 – Expensive replacement parts

4 – Not a good allergy air purifier in most cases

5 – No Fan – while it saves electricity and runs quiet it also moves no air which relates to it’s lack of pollen and dust removal.

Conclusion

If you were looking to sanitize the air this air purifier might work for you. If you want to remove dust, pollen, and allergens then this air purifier will let you down. The claims of being silent and efficient in it’s low power consumption are true – simply because it doesn’t have a fan. However the fact that it doesn’t move air speaks to the fact that it doesn’t remove dust or pollen.

I have no doubt that it is better than an ionic breeze air purifier, which similarly had no fan and used pennies a day. However I prefer a unit with a HEPA filter for the reason that it cleans the air.

Air Purifier – Best Odor Killers

April 2, 2021 by john

Overview

Which is best? The air purifier best odor killer all depends on which odor problem you have. There are six (of ten) available technologies used in air purifiers that are effective for killing or eliminating odors. Of those ozone is the fastest air purifier odor killer , but unfortunately also the one technology that can harm the lungs of people and pets. But depending on your odor problem there are 5 other possibilities.

On this page we will:

1) Review these 6 technologies and how each treats odors.

2) Compare the pro’s and con’s of each.

3) List which air purifier best odor technology works by problem (pets, smoke, etc.)4) Offer some suggestions, which may include several of these technologies.

Air Purifier Best Odor Killers

Ozone – Extremely effective for killing odors, ozone is a highly unstable substance which attaches itself easily to gas particles. (see the pro’s and con’s for the dangers of ozone).

Carbon – activated carbon, or charcoal, is a natural mineral that has millions of tiny pores. When odor passes around carbon it is easily attracted to and gets caught within the tiny pores within carbon. Once these pores are filled then the carbon must be replaced.

Zeolite- Similar to carbon zeolite is a naturally occurring substance which has millions of tiny pores and microscopic crevices. Often used in cat litter zeolite is a natural volcanic compound. However for some reason (which I don’t understand) zeolite is not used in many air purifiers.

Electrostatic – If you’ve seen the infomercials for Oreck then you know about the “washable truman cell”. This is nothing special in the air purifier world and is also called electrostatic plates or grids. These charged plates can often kill gases and odors as they pass through the electrical field created across the plates.

UVC light- UV isn’t so much of an air purifier best odor killer, but because it can inhibit mold and mildew I mention it here.

Negative Ion- A negative ion machine creates ion particles that go out into the room that are effective in killing odors.

Ozone Pro’s and Con’s

Pro’s

1 – Great for smoke odor

2 – Good for pet odors

3 – Great for killing mold and mildew in the room

4 – Great for killing kitchen odors

Con’s

1 – Too much ozone can harm the lungs

2 – Does not help with dust or pollen

3 – Can irritate animals (it can kill birds)

Carbon Pro’s & Con’s

Pro’s

1 – Great for smoke

2 – Great for kitchen odors

3 – Great for pet odors

4 – Great for chemical fumes and odors

Con’s

1 – Has to be replaced periodically

2 – Most carbon filters are overpriced

Carbon is the air purifier best odor absorber.

Zeolite Pro’s & Con’s

Pro’s

1 – Great for new car smells

2 – Great for kitchen odors

3 – Great for pet odors

4 – Great for chemical fumes and odors

5 – Can be re-used by putting it in the sun

Con’s

1 – Hard to find in it’s pure form

2 – Not available for most air purifiers

Electrostatic Pro’s & Con’s

Pro’s

1 – Good for smoke

2 – Good for kitchen odors

3 – OK for pet odors

4 – Fair for chemical fumes and odors

5 – Washable

Con’s

1 – Doesn’t help with dust

2 – Won’t do much for mold/mildew

UV light Pro’s & Con’s

Pro’s

1 – Kills mold, germs, bacteria

Con’s

1 – Will not kill many odors

Negative Ion Pro’s & Con’s

Pro’s

1 – Inexpensive

2 – Kills mold and mildew

3 – Good for general odors (cooking, etc.)

4 – Safe (and in fact improves the health of lungs)

5 – Good for smoke6 – Good for pet odors

Con’s

1 – Not as effective as the first 3 technologies

2 – Relatively passive

Air Purifier Best Odor Killer – By Problem

Pet Odors- Carbon and/or Zeolite. Then electrostatic. A combination of carbon and electrostatic is ideal, with negative ion to kill odor and create healthier air for the pets.

Kitchen Odors – Carbon and/or Zeolite. Then electrostatic.

Smoke- Ozone (just not with you in the room). Then Carbon and/or Zeolite. Then electrostatic.

Chemicals- Carbon and/or Zeolite. You want to absorb the chemical fumes as much as possible.

Mold and Mildew – Ozone – without you being in the room. Treat the room with Ozone. Once the mold is gone then maintain with negative ions. UV light can also help, but not for big mold problems.

Conclusion & Suggestions

Here are my suggestions:

1) Because most air purifier manufacturers overcharge for carbon filter replacement filters look carefully at the air purifier comparison chart (see link below) for carbon based purifiers .

2) Sometimes cat litter can be used if it is high in zeolite for problem conditions

3) Using an ozone air purifier to “treat” a room (leave the room to do this, and air the room out for several hours afterward) is an effective way to eliminate odors of all kinds. Since Ozone purifiers can be expensive negative ions and carbon might be a more affordable (and safer) alternative.

Best Price Air Purifiers

April 2, 2021 by john

OVERVIEW:

In my search for the best price air purifier it’s ironic that the one I found is also one of the best in terms of technology – the incredible Alive Air Mini!

My Experience With It

I have owned one of these for 3 years now and it runs 24/7 in my bedroom. While I own larger air purifiers I wanted something quiet, efficient, and with affordable filters. The reason I wanted one in the bedroom is:

1) Most dust is skin cells, and we shed the most during sleep. (It’s disgusting, I know)

2) Dust mites in sheets and pillowcases live on skin cells. The more dust is pulled out of the air the less mites

3) If the air purifier has negative ions you will sleep better, according to research in Russia (until I read that I thought my improved sleep was all in my head. I definitely sleep better)

4) I went this whole winter without catching a cold or flu. The ultraviolet light in this air purifier kills germs and viruses.

Why Alot??

Many people have called me asking: “‘ what’s the best price air purifier on the market for a small room?”. They didn’t want to spend a let of  dollars for an air purifier. I was hard-pressed to find something I actually liked until I found this one.

There is no reason to buy an air purifier that is bigger than the space, yet most small air purifiers only use 1 or two technologies. This has 6.

Stages of Purification

What makes it the best price air purifier ? The Alive Air Mini Air Purifier has 6 stages:

Pro’s and Con’s

Pro’s

1 – Affordable Price

2 – Affordable replacement HEPA

3 – 6 Stages of Technology

4 – Quiet operation

10 Types of Air Purifier Filters and How They Work

April 2, 2021 by john

Here’s  the 10 types of Air Purifier Filters explained and what they do:

Think Of There Being 3 Kinds of “Stuff” To Remove From The Air:

#1 Large stuff – dust, hair, pollen, animal dander

#2 Gas stuff – odor, chemicals, vapors

#3 Living Stuff – Mold, mildew, bacteria, germs, viruses

This Is Bad For Your Health. Here’s Why:

#1 Dust, hair, pollen, animal dander = allergies, asthma, odors

#2 Chemicals, vapors = odors, chemical sensitivity, immune system stress

#3 Mold, mildew, bacteria, germs, viruses = immune system (colds, flu, viruses), and odors

There are 9-10 Basic Technologies to Capture, Kill, Or Remove “Stuff”:

#1 Pre-filter, HEPA, Neg/Ion, Plasma Grid = Helpful some odors, asthma and allergies

#2 Carbon, Charcoal, Ozone, Zeolite = Helpful for animal smells, smoke,  odors and chemical sensitivity, and protecting our immune system

#3 UV, TiO2, Plasma Grid, Ceramic = Helpful for immune system protection (colds and viruses), and eliminating musty odors

The “Pro’s” and “Cons” of Each Air Purifier Technology

Top 10 Purification Technologies and What They Do (In Chronological order)

1. Charcoal Filters (1854) – Absorbs odor and some gases.

Pros: Good for smoke, pet odor, and hazardous fumes. Inexpensive.

Cons: None.

2. Ozone (O2) (1881) – Ozone is what you might smell in the air after a thunderstorm. It’s oxygen with an extra charged particle attached which is unstable and only lasts a second but does a great job on odor, mold, etc.

Pros: It kills odors better than anything else. Kills mildew and mold. Good for chemical removal as well. (I love a little Ozone which I turn on a few hours before bed to make the room really fresh and clean)

Cons: In small amounts (low level) it is safe and very effective. (Consumer Reports blasted Sharper Image or Ionic Breeze because their unit put out very high levels of Ozone.

Note: Because of Sharper Image Manufacturers are now either 1) avoiding Ozone 2) calling it “Activated Oxygen” 3) putting timers on Ozone

3. HEPA (1934) – HEPA filters trap up to 99.97% of dust, pollen, dander, etc. Many manufacturers however leave it out because of the manufacturing expense.

Pros: Very helpful for allergies, dog/cat hair, pollen etc. A must for asthmatics

Cons: HEPA filters have to be replaced, but they work very well. Replacement filters are typically overpriced (like printer cartridges) so look for a Purifier Brand whose replacement costs are reasonable (maybe 20-40 depending on the size/thickness).

4. UV Light (1936) – UV light kills many pathogens such as mold, viruses, germs and bacteria. (Used in hospitals) .

Pros: with today’s pathogens and bacteria strains UV is a great addition – especially if you have children, asthma, or immune challenges.

Cons: You have to replace the bulb(s) every year or so. Like with HEPA make sure the Manufacturer isn’t “soaking” you for high replacement costs. Don’t pay more than 20-30 for a bulb.

5. Negative Ion (1974)- Negative Ion is a positive thing for removing some pollen, smog, and some dust. The early ionizers would make your walls black because the charged dirt would adhere to the walls around the unit. That’s now taken care of by grid plates.

Pros: Very affordable method for cleaning the air.

Cons: It works well in combination with other technologies but it’s not very effective by itself.

6. Ceramic – Uses heat inside a chamber to kill pathogens in the air as air is drawn into and thru the chamber. (This is also how a fever works in our body, raising the temperature to kill a virus).

Pros: Heat kills pathogens.

Cons: Most experts believe UV does a better job, with a lot less electricity. You don’t see many of these filters for that reason.

7. Washable Pre-Filters – This basically catches hair and large airborne particles. Most purifiers have these.

Pros: Very inexpensive addition by manufacturers. . It also extends the life of the other filters.

Cons: None

8. Ti02 Photo-Catalytic (1991) – Enhances the UV light up to 4000% to kill germs, viruses, mold, bacteria, as it passes through the filter.

Pros: What’s great is now the UV bulb doesn’t have to be as strong or as big yet works more effectively. Cons: None.

9. Plasma Dust (or Grid) Filters (1989) – Uses a charged grid plate to shower the incoming air with both positive and negative ions. Removes some airborne particles and some micro-organisms. I wouldn’t count on this alone but it will do some cleaning as you’ll see when the plates get dirty. It’s basically an ionizer on steroids. The “Never needs a replacement filter” types (Ionic Breeze, Oreck) fall into this category. (Note: You never need a replacement filter because your lungs are filtering what it doesn’t do a good job on)

Pros: You can wash it.

Cons: Works well, but needs other technologies to do a good job.

#10 New Air Technology From Japan: Pollen, Odor, Dust Sensors I think this is very cool and very useful. The Japanese have developed sensors that detect pollen, odor, and dust in the air.

Pros: Saves electricity and guesswork as you can leave the unit on “Auto” all the time. I think it’s the greatest thing for allergy and asthma prevention. The sensors turn the technologies on/off /low/high depending on the needs of the room.

Cons: None.

Oreck XL Air Purifier Review

April 2, 2021 by john

Overview

In this Oreck XL Air Purifier review I’ll be revealing the story behind this air purifier, from it’s manufacture in China, to showing you many of the pro’s and con’s of the most well known air purifier. The video below will also take you inside the air purifier to show you some of the inner working of this machine.

By the end of this Oreck XL air purifier review you’ll have a better ability to determine whether it is a good idea for your household or not. The newer Oreck XL also includes UV light.

Infomercial Heaven

Having produced several national infomercials I know the inside story behind infomercials, and Oreck was very fortunate that the Sharper Image Ionic Breeze was removed from TV because of high Ozone levels. This paved the way for the Oreck XL to enter the limelight.

To run an infomercial successfully you need at least a 5 (ideally 7) times markup to pay all the expenses, unlike store markups. Online products can often compete by lowering expenses below store markups. Any infomercial on TV that succeeds has to follow this formula, and it gives you idea of the profit built into any item.

Made in China

One of my friends was the first TV spokesperson for the Oreck XL air purifier and according to him the unit cost Oreck 35 to make in China. I know the factory, it is one we have used (they recently changed factories) to make other products. The “Truman Cell” is made in Japan for quality (and perhaps so the Chinese don’t duplicate it). I’m sure the cost is higher since it was first on TV, and now has UV light added.

Most air purifiers today are made in China today because of the low production cost. Plus the quality level is much higher than China used to be known for.

Oreck’s Dubious Claims

The Oreck XL air purifier infomercial claims several things which I take issue to:

1) “You never have to change the filter” – The small charcoal “odor eater” is a small charcoal filter which needs to be replaced every 3-5 months and costs 59 for 2. It absorbs odors and chemicals. Watch the video to get an idea. Oreck get’s away with saying “no filters” by calling it an “odor eater”.

2) “Removes Dust and Pollen” – Without a HEPA filter the “ionic” plates (Truman Cells) will do a less than adequate job of removing pollen and dust. Some dust will collect because of the static charge. This is not your best bet if you have allergies.

2) “Quiet” – I found my Oreck to be neither quiet (at 28 db on low) and especially not when it would make it’s infamous zapping noise in the truman cell. The zapping noise can happen (and yes it’s an electrical zapping) from dust across the electrically charged plates and from bugs being electrocuted across the plates.

Stages of Purification

Now let’s take a look at the filters and technology for cleaning the air. In this Oreck Xl Air Purifier review I am including the UV light of the newer version. the older Oreck XL is no longer sold by Oreck. The oreck now has 5 stages:

Stage 1 This small washable prefilter holds dust (see filters in the video)

Stage 2 A very small carbon filter traps smoke and odors (it be replaced every few months and are ordered separately)

Stage 3 The Ionizer plates (they call them Truman Cells) which attracts pollution and kills odors. This is the primary way that the Oreck cleans the air. These ionic plates – charged plates (+ and – ) – attract soot and other airborne particles like a magnet.

Stage 4 Negative Ionization – creates healthy air and will kill some odors and mold

Stage 5 New Helioshield – Ultraviolet light for killing germs and viruses

Pro’s and Con’s

Pro’s

1 – Now includes UV light

2 – Convenient stores for repairs

3 – Washable

Con’s

1 – Overpriced for the square footage

2 – Does not include HEPA (best for dust and pollen)

3 – Small Carbon filters are very expensive

4 – The Warranty is pro-rated (only 3 years)

5 – Will only treat a small 8 x10 room

Oreck XL Air Purifier Review

“Richardson” Air Purifier Rating

1. Technologies Included: (out of of 10 technologies) 4

2. Particle Removal (Allergens, Dust) 3

3. Immune System Threats (Germs, Virus, etc.) 6 (pro only)

4. Gas Removal (Odor, Chemicals, Smoke) 4

6. Noise Levels 5

7. Ease of Use 9

8. Warranty 3

9. Customer Service/Reputation (reviews) 2

10. Price Value 3

Conclusion

OK, I’m not a big fan of the Oreck having owned several. Without HEPA it is not going to do a great job on allergies. Given that it will only cover a little over 200 square feet (on high speed) it is considered a small room air purifier. A lot of money for a small air purifier which does not carry the best dust technology.

If you have allergies I would look at the comparison chart on this site for a better choice.  Hepa filters get filled with smoke so fast a washable ionic air purifier is a more affordable way to go.

Sharp FP-P40CX Air Purifier Review

April 2, 2021 by john

Overview

I’ll start by saying that in this air purifier review sharp FP-P40CX that I really like the filters in it, and the technology. Plus the initial cost is very reasonable. My primary complaints are the replacement filter costs are very high, the Warranty is short (1 year) and the square footage is a bit low. But if you are looking for a good mid-sized bedroom air purifier for allergies keep reading.

Purchased all over the world the Sharp FP-P40CX is one of several sharp plasmacluster air purifiers which were first introduced in 2001. They have sold over 22 million according to their website. It’s made in China where 99% of all air purifiers today are made but were designed in Japan. Japan fell in love with this model during the SARS scare.

Unlike the FPP models many of the newer Plasmacluster air purifiers (which include the KC model line – KC-C70U, KCC100U, and C150U) now include built in humidifiers in which you add water to a small reservoir. I still own a Plasmacluster Sharo FP-P60CX which is being discontinued in favor of the smaller FP-P40CX (the primary difference the Sharp FP-P60CX covers more square footage.)

Air Purifier Review – Sharp FP-P40CX

Stages of Purification

Now let’s take a look at the filters and technology for cleaning the air. The Sharp FP-P40CX air purifier has 4-5 stages

Stage 1 HEPA. Although a bit pricey when it comes time to replace it this good sized HEPA does a good job of holding dust and pollen.

Stage 2 Carbon – A good sized 12 OZ bag with several carbon pockets it removes gas, odors and smoke. (very pricey to replace @ 70).

Stage 3 Pre-Filter – This washable filter is like a screen door, catching hair and dust which extends the life of the HEPA filter. While Sharp suggests you can vacuum the HEPA on occasion make sure you vacuum it “thorough” the pre-filter.

Stage 4 Positive and negative ions. The unique “Plasmacluster” technology allows you to alternate between health negative ions, positive ions which can destroy some germs, or both. A nice option.

FPP40CX – It’s A Small Room Air Purifier

Because it only covers 232 square feet the Sharp is more of a small room air purifier. On high speed it gets a bit noisy, and the machine shakes a bit side to side (smoothly mind you, but it does move). On low it is very quiet, but does not move a lot of air. The trade off for low energy usage and quieter fan (than the 60CX) explains the smaller square footage.

It has a “pollen feature” but to be honest I don’t get it – it just seems to alternate the fan speed. I can only figure that it “sounded good” in the marketing department. While it is very quiet in the low speed mode (4 speeds) it doesn’t emit enough air at that speed to do much of anything. The carbon filter is said to be washable, however getting water inside an air purifier (and carbon retains chlorine from the water) may not be the best idea. The carbon filter has bags of carbon which, while a good weight to the carbon means it will absorb more gas than most purifiers, have large gaps above and below the bags.

Pro’s and Con’s

Pro’s

1 – Well Made

2 – Quieter than most air purifiers

3 – Includes HEPA and a good Carbon filtration

4 – Nice “human-friendly” design. Has an on/off button for night time sleeping, and variable remote controls.

Con’s

1 – Short 1 year parts and labor warranty

2 – Very Expensive (but good) filter replacements

3 – A bit pricey, but a good value

4 – The yearly operating costs are high. While it is very energy efficient the replacement carbon and HEPa can set you back 180 (Wasn’t that close to the cost of the machine to begin with?)

5 – The low speed is very quiet (17Db) but also completely useless as it moves no air.

6 – A bit noisy on high

Conclusion

In this air purifier review the Sharp FP-P40CX is definitely one of my top 10. It has better-than-average carbon filtration and HEPA size. While you may end up paying more for the initial cost (and too much for the replacement filters) than you will for a Honeywell, Oreck, or similar models you’re money will be better spent getting something with much greater filtration.

It’s a durable model, relatively quiet, and has nice features like an on/off control for the lights (You’ll know how important that is when you try and sleep a night with an air purifier light on). With a list price of 299.99 current prices online run from 250 to 260 delivered. The Warranty is only 1 year parts and labor – which was a bit of a head-scratcher for me. Why would Sharp have such a limited warranty? However I have found that the one I own has been dependable over several years.

If you have allergies and want a good small room air purifier it may be a good choice.

Ionic Air Purifier Reviews and Test Results

April 1, 2021 by john

Ionic Air Purifier Reviews and Test Results

Overview

I was surprised to see that many people still search for the Ionic Breeze Air Purifier model (Sharper Image) because it was pulled by the Federal Trade Commission quite a few years ago for potential health hazards. The hazard: Ozone production. For many consumers the name “Ionic Breeze” became synonymous with “Air Purifier” because of their infomercial success. Their fall open the doors for the Oreck Air Purifier ton take center stage on infomercial.

I did a search myself for “Ionic Air Purifier Reviews” recently and found that Sharper Image (even though they went bankrupt) has a site which sells several different models under the name. I will do another review on these other “Overpriced” models at another time (there is not much interest in them).

Since Ionic Breeze died a sudden death you might want to watch some of the “Top 10 Air Purifier” videos via the menu on the left.

Ionic Breeze Purifier Claims

The Sharper Image Ionic Breeze did well on infomercial because it touted “You never had to change the filter” and “It runs silently” and “It uses a penny a day in electricity. Let’s examine these points:

1. Never have to change the filter. By sticking to washable electrostatic (charged plates that attract some pollution and dust) they ignored the more effective HEPA (cloth) filters. Electrostatic is good for smoke and odor, and that’s about it.

2. It runs silently. Because there was no fan motor in the machine it counted on the natural air flow in the room, through the electrostatic plates to clean the air, along with the negative ions going out to kill some gases. Not a very effective way to clean the air, but better than nothing.

3. Runs on a penny a day. This is because it has no fan motor.

Stages of Purification

Now let’s take a look at the filters and technology for cleaning the air. The ionic breeze air purifier has 1 stage:

Stage 1 Electrostatic Plates (also called Ionizing electrostatic precipitator). – These washable plates attract positively and negatively charged particles in the air like pollution, VOC’s and some dust (but not alot of dust or pollen) Two thin wires positively charge (ionize) airborne particles and trap them on a negatively charged removable collection grid made of three to five steel plates. Air from the room is drawn in by the electrostatic forces, not by a fan. This air movement, the “Zenion effect”, produces the breeze users feel.

Pro’s & Con’s

Pro’s

1 – Inexpensive

2 – No replacement filters

3 – Destroys odours, kills germs, smells sweet to some.

4 – Control panel conveniently on top of tower.

5 – If the user forgets to clean the plates, the red light comes on and the unit shuts itself down. (looses efficiency as plates get dirty)

6- Collector plates are well-built, and sturdy

7- Portable, Uses minimal power – Energy efficient

Con’s

1 – No Hepa (best for pollen and dust)

2 – Creates ozone (harmful for sensitive lungs)

3 – Does not help with germs, bacteria, viruses

4 – Harmful to lungs, eyes and nasal passages in that it damages surface tissues (The half-life of ozone in air is approximately 72 hours (3 days) at room temperaturemaking it uncontrollable by consumers.)

5 – It moves very little air

6 – Some users complain about the brightness of the red light indicator at night

7 – Frequent cleaning required of the plates – every 4 or 5 days

8 – Internal ionizing wires need cleaning after eight to ten days. This will stop a humming noise caused by particle build-up on the charging wire

9 – Like all ionizers, the unit can create a black wall effect if left too long in one spot.

10 – Annoying sparking and crackling noises may develop when collector plates and ionizer wires are not kept perfectly clean

Conclusion

If you have allergies, find an air purifier with HEPA and skip the Ionic Breeze. If you have asthma DO NOT USE THIS MODEL, as it does create some Ozone which can irritate lungs. However if you smoke cigarettes then this might be an inexpensive alternative way to clear smoke. You won’t have to buy a HEPA filter which gets clogged with nicotine.

Because Sharper Image went bankrupt (someone else bought the name to sell the current version) you’ll want to keep that in mind.

I hope these Ionic Air Purifier Reviews have been of help.

Will an Air Purifier Help Dog or Cat Allergies?

April 1, 2021 by john

Up to 30 million Americans, close to 10%, have a pet dander allergy.  To relieve a pet dander allergy it’s important to understand what causes of the allergy to begin with.

Dander, skin flakes, saliva and urine from dogs and cats, can cause allergic reactions such as sneezing, wheezing, runny eyes and noses. Both feathers and the droppings from birds, can increase the allergen exposure.

Dog or Cat Hair Is NOT The Cause of Allergies

I can say that there is also no such thing as a completely non-allergenic breed.

Cat Pet Dander Allergy Relief Allergy

An estimated 6 million Americans are allergic to cats and approximately one third of them have cats in their homes. Allergic reactions to cats can range from inflammation of the nose and eyes to asthma attacks. Sadly, although the most effective treatment is removal of the pet, recent scientific studies have shown that steps can be taken in to significantly decrease one’s exposure to cat allergen without having to find another home for your beloved family member .

Cat allergen is not actually cat hair, or the dander itself, but a protein present in the dander and saliva of cats. The allergens that become airborne as microscopic particles when inhaled into the nose or lungs, can produce allergic symptoms.

Dog Allergy

Dog allergies are less common than cat allergy. To contrary to popular belief, dog hair is not what makes you feel miserable – just like with cats, it is a specific protein in the dander that gets to you. For some allergy sufferers, a dog’s lick may also set off an allergic response.

Because dogs tend to scratch themselves more than cats, dog allergen can be more easily introduced into the air. The reason for excessive scratching may be that the dog itself is allergic to something in your home. There are hundreds of possible causes of this, the most common is mold. It is worth mentioning that the same source may be worsening your own allergy symptoms, so taking care of it would make life easier for both you and your pet.

4 Types of Purification for Pet Allergies

These are the 4 types that will help with pet dander allergy relief, in order of effectiveness:

Washable PreFilter Having a washable pre-filter on your air purifier screens out particles of dust coming into the unit. A washable pre-filter removes most of the larger particles before they have a chance to reach the other technologies.

Washable Electrostatic Grid is an  electric dust collector trapping also  pollens, pet dander, molds and someother airborne pollutants that passed through the PreFilter.

Hepa Filter  A Hepa Filter is extremely important technology to have for anyone with asthma or any allergies. It removes pollen, dust, mold spores, and pet dander.

Activated Carbon Filter is by far the most effective filter for removing pet odours.

Additional Technologies Negative Ions, UV, TI02. Although these other technologies don’t specifically or directly help with Pet Allergies, UV and the magnifying effect of UV by TI02 does kill viruses, bacteria, mold and mildew that will be helpful to both Pet and People with a pet dander allergy.

Conclusion

Having an Air Purifier for a pet dander allergy relief that also generates negative ions is a plus for pets and humans alike. The addition of negative ionization in a room is known to ‘make birds sing’ as it mimics air conditions in the forests and in general creates ‘healthy’ air.

Newport 9000 Air Purifier Review

April 1, 2021 by john

Overview

A company called Real Spirit USA markets the Newport 9000 purifier which they sell to major big box brands and on their website. Their website name is Ultra Pure and/or Advanced PureAir.

Most people notice that the Newport 9000 is similar in features and appearance to the AliveAir (AliveAir.com), AirpodCleaner (airpodcleaner.com), and the Surround Air “Multi-tech XJ-3800 Intelli-pro” (also sold by Heaven Fresh). Despite the similar design, and similar technologies there is more to the story. In this article we will point out the differences.

Newport 9000 vs. Intelli-Pro

The original design does go back a few years when Surround Air, Real Spirit (Ultra-Pure/Alive Air) approached the factory which makes them in China. The factory is the same that now makes the Oreck Air Purifier. Oreck came in to work with that factory years after they were already working with Real Spirit.

Surround Air (which also sells to Heaven Fresh) began selling the original model as “Intelli-Pro”. The principles from Real Spirit (AliveAir & Ultra-Pure) chose to redesign and upgrade many of the inner-workings of the model. This included upgraded circuit boards, a upgrade to the fan motor, a remote control, and improved electronics.

Real Spirit sold their first revised version as the “Newport 9000”.

The Newport 9000 Air Purifier, once popular for its effectiveness in purifying indoor air, are no longer in production.

As an alternative I recommend considering the COWAY AP-1512HH Mighty Air Purifier as a worthy replacement.

It has gained a reputation for exceptional performance and advanced features.

Company History

The principle owners of Real Spirit are:

Dr. Malcolm Currie, Chairman, who is the former chairman of Hughes Aircraft and Delco Electronics. He was also the design head for the EV-1, the first mass-produced electric car which unfortunately was killed by GM. It was ahead of its time. He and Richard Mayer started Currie Technologies, which is the primary producer of electric motors for just about every electric scooter, skateboard, and small electric motor in the world. Currie Tech provides scooters and skateboards to Mongoose, and Schwinn amongst others.

Richard Mayer, CEO, serves as the President of Currie Technologies, Inc. Richard is an electric motor genius, which is why Dr. Curry created Currie Technologies with him. Mayer originally owned an electric Motor Car Company which sold electric cars to celebrities like Madonna, and Ed Begley Jr.

From Newport 9000 to Alive Air/Shield

Currie Technologies and Richard Mayer is the reason for ongoing “redesigns” and upgrades of this air purifier took a major leap for both Real Spirit and its Alive Air Division. After selling the Newport for several years they redesigned the fan motor in the AliveAir machine (and the “Shield” model) to be able to run for over 100,000 hours (Almost 12 years of continuous use). It also increased the square footage, and lowered the noise slightly.

Since the fan motor is the major expense in an air purifier, and primary factor in longevity, this represents a major upgrade. They also added safety features (shut-off switches) within the filters of the machine. Word is they are also in the process of upgrading the filters to be bacteriostatic, adding another level to the ability to treat the air.

This redesign brings the Alive Air purifier up to a 5 Year Warranty, whereas the Surround Air Intelli-pro (with the older motor) is 2. The Newport is 1.

9 Stages of Technology

Now let’s take a look at the filters and technology for cleaning the air. The Newport air purifier has 7 stages of Purification, and 2 stages of monitoring and maintenance.

Stage 1 Pre-filter. To capture dust and hair.

Stage 2 Electrostatic. To capture soot and pollution.

Stage 3 HEPA. To capture dust, dirt, and pollen.

Stage 4 Tio2. Kills germs, bacteria and Viruses when used with UV.

Stage 5 UV or Ultraviolet. Used in hospitals to kill germs, mold, viruses, bacteria.

Stage 6 Carbon. To remove chemical fumes, odors and gases.

Stage 7 Negative ION. To kill odors and mold spores out in the room (walls, etc.) and re-enliven the air.

Stage 8 Air Sensors. Pollen, dust and Odor sensors monitor the room and change the fan speed with problems.

Stage 9 Filter Monitor. This really just a timed sensor which tells you when to clean the washable filters and check the HEPA filter.

Pro’s and Con’s

Top 10 Best Air Purifiers 2020

April 1, 2021 by john

Not many new air purifiers have been produced this year.  Only upgrades. Prices have remained roughly the same as last year but with fewer sales. I still find that most companies overcharge for for replacement filters. I’m also hoping that some companies can bring production back to the U.S. to create some jobs. But you’ll find good value in the reviews below to spend your money wisely.

The following air purifier ratings and reviews here are based on spec sheets, good overall value for the average home and many consumer issues such as warranty/guarantee terms, filter replacement costs, square footage, consumer feedback, etc.

How To Choose The Best Air Purifier For You ?

People call me confused about which air purifier to pick. They all sound good, don’t they? Here are 3 ways to remove the confusion and get clear about which is right for you:

Step 1) Review and learn the ten air purifier technologies so you can know which of the 10 you need. The Top Air Purifier Home Page has a video which explains all 10. Many air purifiers only use 3-4 technologies and I suggest looking for more comprehensive models. In many cases you’ll actually save money.

Your problem (EX: pollen, dust, Mold, Allergies, Chemical fumes, Smoke, exhaust fumes, etc.) each requires different technologies.

Step 2) Determine the square footage. Most air purifier square footage is based on 7 foot ceilings. Don’t buy one that is too under-powered for the room size.

Step 3) Review the comparison chart and choose a few that match your budget and technology you picked.

Step 4) Watch the video reviews, read the detailed specifications and comments about each model using the information from the preceding steps.

NOTE: The Top 10 Best Air Purifiers 2020 are not always the best sellers. They are simply presented to help you in your search for the one that fits your needs (For Example: Many air purifiers that are good for pollen won’t do a thing for odor).

#1 The Alive Air Purifier

There are several things I really like about the Alive Air Purifier which show that some thought went into this model: 1) 9 technologies make it one of the most complete air purifiers 2) The affordable HEPA filters which include HEPA 3) The coverage at over 800 Square Feet and 4) The fan motor which is rated for over 100,000 hours of continuous use. Free Shipping and a great price at 297 via the link below make it a great buy.

#4 Austin Air

One of the few remaining U.S. manufacturers the Austin Air is basic, yet has some specific usage for people with environmental sensitivities. I recommend it for people with lung and/or severe allergy problems. The Austin Air Purifier line, while a bit expensive, has a basic design. The filters – HEPA and Carbon or Zeolite – are larger (and hence much more expensive) than most but will pull more chemicals and particles out of the air. For a normal healthy family (with maybe some allergies) I go more for other models, but for the super sensitive people I might lean toward the Austin.

#5 Blue Air Purifier – 540

Very solidly made the Blue Air Purifier has good HEPA coverage for pollen and dust. The replacement filters are super expensive. They have a tobacco filter which I sometimes recommend for smokers and cigar aficionados. A bit pricey when you can get more for less money it is a very solidly constructed unit.

For more information and more reviews go to BlueAir Purifier.

#6 Sharp Plasmacluster Air Purifier

The Sharp air purifier is a good mid-range unit. Again the filter replacements are expensive but the HEPA does a good job. The one I had did seem to vibrate some but that didn’t seem to affect the performance.

For more information and consumer reviews go to SharpAirPurifier.

#8 Alen Air

I’m not quite sure what to say about the Alen Air Purifier. It works fine, has several technologies but nothing really stands out about it from other similar (and sometimes less expensive models).

1. Technologies Included: (out of of 10 technologies) 3

2. Particle Removal (Allergens, Dust) 9

3. Immune System Threats (Germs, Virus, etc.) 1

#9 Honeywell 50250 Air Purifier

It’s a beast! It’s a big round fan with a HEPA filter basically. A bit loud and the filters are expensive. I’d recommend it for dust only if you have a space big enough in the middle of the room for it.

1. Technologies Included: (out of of 10 technologies) 2

#10 Friedrich Air Cleaner

I probably could have found a better #10 model but since Consumer Reports rated this model as one of their best (I absolutely can’t imagine why, unless someone was paid off!) I’ll say a few words. It looks and weights as much as a doghouse. The many electrostatic plates create ozone which can be an irritant. The only good news is that you won’t have to but HEPA filters. I think this is more for a garage or factory with chemicals and fumes in the air. Bend your knees when you lift it!

Why A Mold Air Purifier Often Won’t Kill Mold or Mildew

March 23, 2021 by john

There is no specific ” mold air purifier ” but rather different technologies that do different things when it comes to mold. And most air purifiers don’t do much for killing mold, although they claim to help with mold. That’s because HEPA air filters will capture mold spores, but they do absolutely nothing for killing mold, they just help it from spreading faster.

This means that the Austin Air, IQAIR, Honeywell (and other primarily HEPA air purifiers) will not do a good job. It also means there may be a growing problem inside the HEPA filter itself as mold can grow there. To kill mold you have to go out into the room where it exists.

Common molds include Mucor and  Stachybotrys which grow in warm and damp areas. The mold does not trigger the allergic reaction but the spores in the air do.  Common reaction are coughing and sneezing when the spores are inhaled.

NOTICE: IF YOU HAVE A MOLD PROBLEM INSIDE WALLS, UNDER RUGS, OR SHEETROCK YOU CAN’T SIMPLY STICK AN AIR PURIFIER IN THERE AND EXPECT IT TO GO AWAY. YOU’RE GOING TO HAVE TO REPLACE THE SHEETROCK IN MOST CASES. IT CAN HOWEVER REDUCE THE HEALTH RISK IN THE MEANTIME, AND PREVENT IT FROM SPREADING….

4 Types of Purification For Killing Mold

These are the 4 types of Mold Air Purifier Technologies that will help, in order of effectiveness:

Ozone. By far the most effective at rapid mold and mildew removal Ozone will go out into a room, and onto walls, where it will kill it on contact. The downside is that Ozone in high levels will also irritate lungs. So if you have an ongoing problem you might get an air purifier to “treat” a room. In other words turn the Ozone up and leave the room closed. Turn it off and let it “air out” for several hours. Ozone tends to dissipate very fast.

Negative Ionizers. Negative ions will kill mold on walls and in rooms. Not as fast or effective as Ozone on the other hand it is actually good for lung problems. Negative ions can increase energy and mood according to Russian research.

Ultraviolet Light Somewhat effective at mold it kills the spores as they passes thorough the air purifier. I like the combination of UV and negative ions as one kills the spores while the other goes out into the room where mold is spreading. It also helps keep mold from growing inside the HEPA filter.

Titanium Dioxide (Tio2) This nanotechnology enhances Ultraviolet light up to 1000x according to my scientist friend, and hence helps UV do a much stronger job on Mold and Mildew. It needs UV light to shine on it.

Treating A Room With Mold and Mildew

If you have moldy sheetrock, or you have wet conditions (as in flooding or high moisture) then you’re going to want a Mold Air Purifier for your health, but you’ll need to replace sheetrock if it is moldy (A mold air purifier will not fix moldy sheetrock). You’ll also need chemicals or professional help if it is under floors, behind walls, inside wood, etc. Mold is dangerous for your health, and some houses have to be remodelled or even destroyed if the mold has taken over. Any mold Air Purifier is just a way to protect your immune system while the work is done.

However if the problem is small, or contained pretty well, then the mold air purifier may be all you need. If it’s a wet basement with mildewy smells an air purifier with Neg. Ions, and UV /Tio2 will kill the smell and mildew but you may need a de-humidifier to keep the build up at bay.

If I use an Ozone Generator Air Purifier to kill mold – I’ll crank it up and let it run overnight. Then air it out for several hours before spending time in the room. These units can be expensive (there are a few inexpensive ones around too) so maybe you can borrow one.

If I use a Negative Ion/UV/Tio2 Machine – I’ll crank it up and let it run on high for a few days then reassess how the room is doing.

A suggested Air Purifier for Mold…

Airpodcleaner MT3C – 6 Stage Air Purifier

The affordable, yet powerful Airpodcleaner MT3C  is a 6-stage air purifier which includes HEPA, On/Off Ozone, Negative Ion for mold killing plus its very effective against pollen, dust, odor with Carbon and a pre-filter. It also includes UV light for viruses and germs. It will cover 500 square feet.

Conclusion

Get a timed (on/off) Ozone Machine if Mold is your only problem. If you also have allergies, and want to continue cleaning your house after getting rid of mold get a multi-stage air purifier that include negative ions, Ultraviolet light (UV), along with HEPA to capture the spores.

Is An Asthma Air Purifier Really Safe?

March 23, 2021 by john

Overview

I first started looking for an asthma air purifier in 1965, when I was 8 years old and suffered with terrible allergies to pollen, dust and dogs.

Asthma attacks brought with them a fear of death. These attacks were triggered in the fall, around dogs, and in the horse hair seats at church. I also had food allergies. I ended up with an old HEPA filter/purifier, an ionizer (which turned the wall black), and an old carbon filter machine all running at the same time in my bedroom. I went for allergy shots each week and took medications to prevent and/or relieve asthma attacks.

These machines weren’t specifically designed for asthma, but since my triggers were airborne (mostly) I wanted to try and help my lungs. Did my asthma air purifier really help? At that time I honestly didn’t know whether the relief was psychological or physiological but I did sleep better and feel better.

Asthma Air Purifier Technology

Which type of technology does an asthma air purifier use? It all depends on the type of asthma you have, or more specifically what triggers the asthma. The type of filtration changes whether you have pollen-triggered asthma (as I did), lung condition asthma, exercise-induced asthma, or a cough related asthma. Also the specific type of allergens change the filters needed. Here are the basic asthma air purifier filters as they relate to asthma:

HEPA – HEPA filtration is the #1 technology for asthma since it removes the most airborne particles. Most allergists will recommend a HEPA asthma air purifier first for allergy-induced asthma. HEPA is a cloth-like filter that has to be replaced every 4-9 months on average. It is best for capturing and removing dust, pollen, dirt, and most airborne particles. If your asthma is allergy-based asthma start with HEPA. But don’t stop there. If you’re allergic to (or “also allergic to”) mold HEPA will not do the job.

UV – Ultraviolet (UV) light kills most germs, bacteria, mold, mildew, and viruses. Because asthmatics often have a weakened immune system and these foreigners or pathogens stress the immune system adding UV, while not primary, can be an inexpensive and helpful addition.

PreFilter – A Pre-filter looks like a screen door, is usually washable, and captures hair and dust. HEPA does a much more complete job and the washable prefilter in front of it is primarily to save money by extending the life of the HEPA. If you have dog or cat the hair captured will be worth its inclusion.

Carbon – Carbon filters are treated charcoal minerals which have millions of tiny cell pockets. These pockets are very effective at trapping gas, odor, and toxic chemical fumes. If you are chemically sensitive, and /or chemical fumes bring on asthma, Carbon would be added to your list. Because these toxins affect and weaken the immune system it can help the body.

Electrostatic – Also called “truman cells”, grids, ionic cleaners, or ionic plates. These type of air purifiers capture particles using positively and negatively charged “washable plates” or grids. Oreck is one example. Most do not have HEPA filters. The washable part is great (and great for marketing), but the effectiveness is limited. Good for smoke it will not remove pollen, dust and airborne particles like HEPA. Also, some models with flat plates and no holes in the plates can cause asthma which can trigger asthma attacks.

Tio2 – Used in conjunction with UV it simply magnifies the effectiveness of the virus, germ, and bacteria killing of ultraviolet light.

What Causes Asthma

The path I took to get asthma relief did include different asthma air purifiers as a way to prevent attacks. I use an air purifier today to be as healthy as possible, even though I no longer have asthma. To get rid of asthma, which also meant getting rid of my allergies, I had to:

1) Getting my liver cleansed of toxins which were causing me to create too many histamines.

2) Special treatments to the brain which had to do with the mind-body causes of allergies. Many allergies (and hence asthma attacks) are caused by patterns in the brain which cause energy blockages in the nervous system.

3) Building up my adrenal glands which relieved the muscle spasms of asthma.

Conclusion

If you’re looking for asthma relief from allergy-enduced asthma then I would try and remove as many problems from the air as I could with HEPA, UV, Tio2, and a Pre-filter. I would also try and have the air circulate in the room thorough the asthma air purifier at least 3-4 times.

Best Air Purifiers for Smoke Reviewed

March 23, 2021 by john

Air Purifiers For Smoke

Overview

The truth is that most air purifiers for smoke (when it comes to cigarettes and cigars) will disappoint. That’s because most are designed for pollen and dust and not smoke – the challenge is the tar. However 3-4 of the 10 available technologies for air purifiers may satisfy that need.

In this review I’m starting with tobacco smoke, but also will be handling smoke problems for:

1 – Cigarette & Cigar smoke removal

2 – Stove and Fireplace fumes

3 – Kitchen/cooking smoke

4 – Industrial smoke from pollution, factories, etc.

Air Purifiers For Smoke From Tobacco

Two problems exist with cigar/cigarette smoke, smoke and odor. Removing tobacco smoke from the air is easy, and many air purifiers for smoke can do that. The hard part is tobacco smell because of tar. Let’s handle the smoke part first, and here are the technologies that work for this:

1 – Ionizer Plates (also called electrostatic or truman cells)- include washable electronic plates (as with the Oreck Air Purifier, and Ionic Breeze), or electrostatic grids (Alive Air). This technology attracts and disable molecules of smoke via positive and negative electrically charged plates and wires. With this technology the air must go into and through through the purifier to be effective.

2 – Negative Ionization – Negative ion generators don’t use plates but send negative ions into a room disabling some smoke. Not as effective as the plate/grid method it sends the negative charge into the air which means the particles can drop and attach to the carpet or other surfaces in the room.

3 – Ozone Machines – Ozone is probably the fastest way of removing smoke. The downside is that ozone can irritate or even damage lungs in high levels (it is not recommended that you be in the room during it’s use). Brands include Ecoquest (formerly Alpine and now Vollara) however there are several inexpensive chinese brands available for low levels of ozone.

4 – Carbon – Carbon will very effectively remove smoke, however the carbon will need to be in high amounts and will have to be replaced often.

Conclusion

For smoke it is best to use the electrostatic air purifiers. In preference use the “grid” types as the “plates can generate ozone which could irritate sensitive lungs.

If you want to get rid of smoke and dust or pollen then a combination of HEPA and electrostatic would be the way to go.

Air Purifiers For Tobacco Odor

Cigarette smells are easy to remove at the time of smoking, but becomes a more serious problem when it gets into curtains, walls, carpets, etc. The air purifier WILL NOT get the odor out of walls and fabrics, no matter whether it uses ozone, ions or any of the ten technologies. This is due to the tar attaching itself to the actual molecules in these materials, and it will continue to emit smells for years. Cleaning or replacing the carpets, curtains (drycleaning may work) or painting the walls is the only way, unfortunately. That’s how deep tar gets into the molecules.

Conclusion

To reduce cigarette smell from your home you have to remove the cigarette smoke from the air as the smoking occurs, before it attaches itself to the materials in the room.

Fireplace & Woodburning Stoves

Smoke from Fireplace & Woodburning Stoves is best removed at the time the fireplace is on, before can attach itself to curtains, carpets, etc. (Unless you love the smell – as I do). Wood burning smoke is not as strong, or unhealthy as cigarette smoke and will not attach itself as deeply as tar. The use of electrostatic (found in many smoke air purifier as mentioned above) will remove most smoke.

The one thing I would include in this situation is a negative ion generator. Not only will it kill some of the smoke (although it’s not as effective as otehr means) more importantly it will make the air healthier, especially because wood burning will utilize oxygen in the room.

Kitchen Smoke & Cooking Odors

Cooking smoke (QUICK – before the smoke alarm goes off!) is relatively easy to remove with air purifiers that include carbon or electrostatic grids or plates. Cooking odors also are easily removed with electrostatic, carbon, negative ion or any combination of the three.

Conclusion

For kitchen smoke you’ll find most types of smoke air purifiers will clear the air rather quick. The exception is HEPA – which will remove dust and pollen but not gas particles.

Air Purifiers For Smoke From Car Pollution

At my house in Manhattan Beach California I lived a block from the ocean. But I had a pollution problem: Why was it that after washing the windows I’d would find a layer of black soot within a day?. Was it jet fuel? I lived close to LAX airport.

I finally realized that the car traffic nearby was the culprit. So despite living with an ever present ocean breeze the air was very polluted by nearby traffic. I put in a 9 stage Alive Air Purifier with a washable pre-filter, washable electrostatic grid (and HEPA filter). The black soot meant washing the pre-filter and grid every week or so. Better it than my lungs!

The carbon removed more of the toxic gases within the air, while the negative ion generator in it re-enlivened the air (pollution is positively charged ions which, by reducing healthy negative ions, can create headaches and will reduce both brain function and energy levels).

Conclusion

For Car Pollution – use electrostatic, negative ion generators, ozone, and/or carbon filters.

Smoke Conclusions

I hope this review of air purifiers for smoke helped your search for the right model. In general – electrostatic grids are the most affordable. Carbon and ozone are the most effective, although carbon will cost money and ozone can irritate lungs.

The comparison chart on this site and video reviews can show you which models include the technologies for smoke removal.

Blueair Air 503 Purifier Review and Test Results

March 20, 2021 by john

Overview

When I first took my Blueair purifiers apart I immediately saw that they are going for particle removal, and trying to do it right. They are going for the higher-priced, high-quality end of the market. I wondered whether the high price of their units (in my opinion) was because:

1 – They are made in Sweden, rather than China (labor costs).

2 – They are modeling the IQAIR Purifier Company from Sweden which also goes for the high-priced, high-quality end of the market (£899-1200)

Most of their models are great for particle removal but what they don’t cover is germs, viruses, and bacteria. Often that is the trade off companies have to make – go for particle removal, and skip ultraviolet and other germ/virus technology to stay competitive. So we’re talking Hepa, or Hepa-like and electrostatic filters. I have several of their models and will be doing video reviews shortly to take you inside the machine.

I start my review with the popular Blueair 503 Model(formerly the 501).

Company History

The BlueAir company many originated in Sweden although I think the air purifiers are manufactured in China. In 1996 they have established themselves as a worldwide player in the air purifier market.

Pros & Cons

Pros

1 – Filter Change Indicator Light so as not to void warranty

2 – Durable steel construction

3 – Has wheel casters (great if you want to move it alot

4 – Quiet (although in quiet move doesn’t move much air)

5 – Energy Efficient

Cons

1 – Not a true Hepa filter – ‘Hepa-like”

2 – No pre-filter, short filter life (6 months) as a result – electrostatic probably clogs up more and is less efficient as a result

3 – The seating of the filters in the housing is not a tight seal and allows for some air to by-pass reducing the air cleaning efficiency

4 – Nothing to kill viruses, bacteria or mold/mildew

Rabbit Minusa2 Air Purifier Review and Test Results

March 20, 2021 by john

Overview

Rabbit MinusA2 Air Purifier is a high class, great-looking model. But  does it work better than other air purifiers? This review will answer those questions. This is Rabbit Airs third generation air purifier and is an upgraded version of the Minus2A SP-1004. Like all the Rabbit Air Purifiers they are made in Korea.

I loved the fact that someone is taking an interest in air purifier design, and technology, as many of the most highly rated models like Austin Air and IQAIR have stayed with a very boxy gray/white design with older technology. Some of the larger electronics stores like Frys and Best Buys were carrying the lower end Rabbit Air Biogs for awhile, and even the high-end MinusA2 (for a few months) because they look very modern. But the higher prices of the Rabbit Air meant most stores opted for more affordable units. Now you have to go online to find them. The technology is really ahead of others, although so is the price.

Rabbit Air Auto Sensors

The Rabbit MinusA2 has one air quality sensor which adjusts the fan speed when it detects particles in the room. Some of the other models on the market like the Alive Air Purifier use three sensors (Pollen, odor and dust). The challenge with sensors is the sensitivity level they are set for determines how they operate. Don’t get me wrong, I like the sensors, but because each home is different the way they are set in the factory means a wide variety of effectiveness.

While the Company recommends running the machine for 72 hours to give the sensors a clean air reference I found a very effective way to set the sensors in 3 minutes. Any time the unit is unplugged or the power goes out the sensors must be reset.

A very cool feature is that an indicator lamp on the ride side control panel (see the video) changes color from blue (clean) to red (poor) depending on the level of particles the Rabbit MinusA2 sensors detects in the air. The geeky side of me loves this feature, although you wont see it come on too often if you’re like me and run the unit 24/7. The air stays clean in my home.

I’ve been involved with air purifier sensors and sensor designs with my air purifier tech designer friend. Here’s the challenge: There are so many millions of particles in the air the question is how many particles do you set it for? A smokers house, or carpeting with cat odors, is going to set off a sensitive odor sensor practically forever. The manufacturers problem with sensors has been the rate of returns when people cant get sensors to go on or off properly.

The Rabbit MinusA2 has something which resolves much of this – it has settings to adjust the sensitivity (see the manual).

This review continues after a brief review of the stages of purification.

Stages of Purification

Now let’s take a look at the filters and technology for cleaning the air. The Rabbit MinusA2 SPA-780A air purifier has 6 stages:

Stage 1 Pre-filter – gathers hair and dust extending life of HEPA. It is anti-bacterial.

Stage 2 Medium Filter” – This is a thin cloth pre-filter which is anti-bacterial to trap hair, dust, and bacteria. It seems redundant to the pre-filter, but it traps particles slightly smaller than the pre-filter.

Stage 3 BioGS HEPA Filter – removes dust and pollen. This is your most important filter.

Stage 4 Custom Filter – You get to choose another of 3 filters for either toxins, germs, or pet allergies. I’m not convinced these are all that different, or that much more effective (I have owned 2 of the 3) but the idea sounds like you’re getting something different. I think it is more marketing built into the design.

Stage 5 Activated Carbon Filter – absorbs odor and chemicals

Stage 6 Negative Ions – These go out into the room and kill odor and mold spores. This is good for your health and lungs as well.

Conclusion: There is a bit of redundancy with the filters. While the manual says replace them every 12 months that will depend on conditions. I had to replace the HEPA and medium filter after 9 months which set me back £100.

Four Modes of Operation

The MinusA2 has a Manual, Quiet, Auto, Pollen, and Sleep Mode.

In the auto mode a light sensor measures the level of light in the room and will turn off the mood light after several minutes and shut the machine down to slow speed.

“Sleep mode” is very cool and happens automatically. The Sleep Mode Indicator turns on in the Silent Mode (very quiet) and with the “auto” function on. What happens then is it automatically switches off Mood Light and Air Quality Indicator.

I can’t figure out how “pollen mode” does anything different since all the filters are in operation no matter what you do.

Weird ‘Mood” Lights

A switchable mood light in the Rabbit minusA2 is an idea popular in Asia according to one of my friends, but doesn’t go over in the US. The light fluctuates (see the video) between pink and blue in the low speed. It is bright but can be turned off.

According to Rabbit Air the mood light can affect your health. “Mood light on air purifier helps to normalize blood pressure, pulse, and facilitate deep breathing, which puts a person in a state of long-lasting calm and relaxation.” I’d like to see some science on that wild claim. I’d think with their “high-tech” approach they’d know better.

Pros and Cons

Pros

1 – Very sleek design

2 – Effective 5-stage filtration

3 – Wall mounted option

4 – Great controls and electronics

Cons

1 – A bit loud on low at 26 decibels

2 – Replacement filter package is expensive

4 – Only covers 400 square feet or less (despite claims of 800)

Specifications and Technologies

Yearly Costs: £100-150

Decibel Level: 26/

Warranty – 5 Years

Number of Speeds – 5

Filters – 4

Notes: The Rabbit Air Brushless DC (Direct Current) Motor (BDCM) is the most current technology and for me the way to go with an air purifier. Many manufacturers (IQAIR and Austin Air for example) still use the old “brush motors” which are louder, produce ozone, and do not last as long. These BDCM motors are quieter, ozone free, and produce less electromagnetic currents while using less electricity. I’ve had my Alive Air Purifier running for 5 years now 24/7 and it is rated for 100,000 hours of operation. So far so good.

Air Purifier Rating

1. Technologies Included: (out of of 10 technologies) 7

2. Particle Removal (Allergens, Dust) 9

3. Immune System Threats (Germs, Virus, etc.) 3

4. Gas Removal (Odor, Chemicals, Smoke) 7

5. Longevity/Quality 9

6. Noise Levels 8

7. Ease of Use 9

8. Warranty 10

9. Customer Service/Reputation (reviews) 9

10. Price Value 6

Score: 77 = Excellent

Rabbit Minusa2 Air Purifier Conclusion

If it weren’t for the cost, and replacement filter cost, of the Rabbit MinusA2 I would recommend it highly. I love the design, looks, and filters in it, although I found some of the extra filters redundant. Great for allergies, I only wished they had UV or other germ and virus killing technology. I like the Warranty as well. It’s a bit small for the cost. If money isn’t a concern, looks are important to you, and dust/pollen are your main concerns, then this might be a great choice for your home.

If you need to cover 2 rooms you can buy 2 Alive Air Purifiers (7 technologies) for the price of one Rabbit Air MinusA2 (6 technologies). You’ll sacrifice looks, but save money in the process.
