The NRDC gives the following advice based on its findings: molds release spores, which get air borne and cause the most persistent lung diseases. Air purifiers play a significant role in the elimination of fungi from cold, damp, dark corners of homes. When mold-eradication specialists use cleaning agents/chemicals in your home, spores get scattered and airborne. You are advised to turn on your air purifiers simultaneously so that these spores can be eliminated. Spores generally settle in your home during early summer and autumn. For the rest of the year, your skin and lungs are at constant risk. For counteracting this, you can employ professionals for control of fungus and install air-purifiers. As mold and mildew thrive on moisture/humidity, dehumidifiers, air filters/purifiers, vacuum cleaners with a HEPA, vapor steam cleaners and mold resistant bedding – all help prevent mold in your home.
In wet climates, select an air-purifier that can destroy molds. If children are present in the home, install a system that kills most bacteria/viruses. Allergy sufferers need a system that can collect or destroy pet dander, pollen, dust mites, mold spores, mildew, tobacco smoke, or whichever allergen triggers their allergy attacks. Persons with respiration problems caused by lung conditions should be kept away from fragrances or ozone, which would aggravate their suffering. Fumes and viruses are too small to be captured by any filtration device; ozone and negative ions have some effect on them, but the best weapon to destroy them is a UV filter.
Ionizers or Electrostatic filters can be added complementary to HEPA or Ultra HEPA filters(which claim 99.999% air-purification). You can then eliminate everything from dust, pollen and smoke to 0.0001 micron-sized particles. Your best bet for removing airborne spores (mold) is a HEPA air purifier.
