How

What Does an Air Cleaner Pre Filter Do?

March 16, 2021 by john

Summary

The air cleaner pre filter traps large particles entering the purifier protecting the purifier and extending the life of HEPA filters and other internal components.

More Detail:

A pre filter is made to keep large particles and debris from entering the air purifier. This could include hair, dust, pet fur, and other larger particles. Without a pre filter these larger particles would clog HEPA or other filters faster and causes them to be less effective. In other models that do not utilize filters, the pre filter keeps the inside of the machine cleaner and functioning better. Some air purifiers are designed to be easy to clean or require less cleaning, but the addition of a prefilter still can help minimize this cleaning.

Some pre filters are reusable and can be vacuumed or rinsed and then put back to work. The majority however are replacement filters and need to be checked and replaced as frequently as necessary. Each purifier is different and some replaceable filters life can be extended with a quick vacuuming.

“BIG” particles are a fact of life and a pre filter makes sense in almost 100% of applications.

In-Depth Reference(s)

no additional reference material – basic technology

Buying Considerations

If a purifier has no prefilter, make sure to check out how this model operates. If it is a unit with a HEPA filter, the life of the HEPA filter will no doubt be shortened. This means more cost to you (HEPA filters tend to be more expensive than pre filters). If it is a filterless type of technology, you may need to clean the purifier more often or expect a shortened life span of the internal components without a pre filter.

If your air purifier has a washable or cleanable pre-filter, realize that this may be a generous cost savings.

If your air purifier has replaceable pre filters, know the life expectancy and the cost to replace them.

Generic Air Filters a Cost Savings?

March 16, 2021 by john

Will You Save Money using Generic Air Filters vs. a HEPA filter?

Summary

Companies making air filters must adhere to rigid manufacturing standards in order to use the HEPA name. HEPA is the standard. Be suspect of any filter offered at a cheaper price.

More Detail

You may see claims like:

“HEPA-type”

“HEPA-like”

“99% HEPA”

Watch out for inferior products.

The Department of Energy requires manufacturer HEPA filters to remove 99.97% or more airborne particles of 0.3 micro meter in size.

I would recommend sticking with the original manufacturer’s replacement HEPA filter unless you are certain that the replacement filter is either a HEPA or up to the standards that the HEPA label represents.

What is HEPA Air Purifier Technology?

March 16, 2021 by john

Summary

HEPA air purifier filters (HEPA – high efficiency particulate air filters) were originally designed in the 1940’s and continue to be heavily utilized today. In order for an air filter to earn the trademarked HEPA name it must pass rigid requirements including removal of 99.97% of airborne particles 0.3 microns in diameter (1 micron = 1/25,000 inch).

The American Lung Association says that “particles of 0.3 microns diameter represent the respirable size most likely to reach and be deposited in the alveoli of the lungs; they are also the most difficult to remove by mechanical filtration.”

How does a HEPA air purifier work?

A fan blows (or draws) air through a high tech filter and the particles are trapped as they pass through the filter. If the air bypasses the filter it will not be cleaned. This is a passive technology.

More Detail

Particles exist in many different types and sizes. The HEPA filter is designed to trap these particles as they pass into and through the filter medium. The HEPA filter is designed to maximize air flow and still maximize particle retention. Although the filter will become less efficient over time, it is designed to effectively do its job as it slowly becomes “plugged up”. Life expectancy depends on several factors, but generally is from 6 months to 5 years depending on the brand of air purifier. The size, material, and construction of the HEPA filter will ultimately determine it’s longevity. Higher quality HEPA filters last longer, may be larger and thus generally cost more.

What will a HEPA filter remove?

Airborne particles like Pet Allergens (.3 to 100 microns), Dust and Dust Mite Allergens (10-40 microns), Pollens (10-100 microns), Plant Spores (10-70 microns), Airborne Fungi Spores (0.5 to 5 microns), Airborne Mold Spores (2-20 microns), and larger particles of tobacco smoke (0.003 to 0.04 microns).

What won’t a HEPA filter remove?

Pure HEPA Filters do not remove most odors, chemicals, or gases as these particles are too small. The HEPA filter will not remove most VOCs (Volatile Organic Compounds) such as paints, varnishes, cleaning supplies, glues, and adhesives, nor Microorganisms such as Viruses, Antigens, Pathogens, and Bacteria. Note: some of these substances may become trapped in the HEPA filter, but removal is not guaranteed. In the case of Microorganisms, the particle(s) may become trapped but will not necessarily be killed.

HEPA filters do work effectively for what they are intended to do. One point worth repeating: The air must pass through the HEPA air purifier filter in order to be cleaned. This generally limits the effectiveness of the purifier to the room the unit is located in.

Quality air purifiers often use HEPA filters in tandem with Pre-filters, Activated Carbon Filters, and Antibacterial/Germicidal Filters and sometimes, but less often with UV Ultraviolet lights, Electrostatic Precipitators and Charged Media Filters.

In-Depth Reference

Article: The Seven Sins of Air Filter Manufacturers Buying Considerations: – NEEDS LINK TO NEW ARTICLE

Always check the recommended life expectancy of the HEPA filter for the purifier you are considering. You will generally get what you pay for. Some HEPA filters need to be replaced often, others last longer. The bottom line is there will be an ongoing maintenance cost with replacing them. Some warranties actually depend on changing filters regularly. Most importantly though, a HEPA purifier only works well with a properly maintained filter. All reviews in STEP3 include HEPA filter costs when applicable.

Explanation of Recommended Buying Links:

AlerG, Inc. – AlerG is a good company with ownership that is connected to the mission and objectives of the products, not just profit. I have used them successfully. Here is a short Bio of

David Tan, Owner of AlerG taken from their website: David Tan, B.Sc., MBA, the founder of AlerG.com, personally suffers from a variety of allergies and chemical sensitivities. David is also

the cofounder of Smarthome, Inc. the leading supplier and manufacturer of home automation products. In 2001 he retired from his day to day position as Chairman and President of Smarthome, Inc.

to found AlerG, Inc. to supply and manufacture products to help allergy and chemical sensitive sufferers like himself.

achoo! Allergy and Air Products, Inc. – achoo! Allergy is another good company with solid, involved management. They are a leader as well in allergy and air products. I have used them

successfully. Here is a short snippet of Bio of Cade McDonald, Owner, taken from their website: Our goal: When you think allergy, we want you to think achooallergy.com. We are working

feverishly to provide more products, more information, and more value to the 50 million Americans who suffer from allergies, asthma, and multiple chemical sensitivity (MCS).

Buying Air Purifiers on Ebay – Read this especially if you are new to Ebay. Ebay is a great way to find good deals. There are also possible pitfalls. For best results, always read an items

description completely before bidding. If the product description is unclear, email the owner of the item a question. Do not assume anything if it is unclear. Also, only buy from someone who

has a good feedback rating. Typically someone who has at least 100 positive feedbacks with over 97% positive. Another good indicator is if a seller has been online for awhile. Be wary of new

sellers with little or no positive feedback. As you become more experienced, you may be able to successfully differentiate between good and questionable sellers without much feedback. Until

then, stick to sellers with good feedback. Some of my best deals ever are from Ebay. I use eBay often.

Oreck – Purchasing directly from Oreck is the best way to purchase new Oreck air purifiers. You may also have a physical store locally. If so, consider checking them out for specials. Click

Air Purifier Review, Brands A-H

March 16, 2021 by john

STEP 3 in our air purifier review is to compare the top brands of air purifiers on the market. This page includes brands letters A through H.

I have two types of reviews:

Actual Review: air purifiers I have personally used, tested and evaluated.- and -Additional Review: air purifiers I have evaluated without personal testing.

Important: How can I write an air purifier review without actually testing?

It is my rule to use/test at least one purifier in a brands line-up before I will write evaluation only reviews for the other purifiers in that same brands same line-up. I generally use/test

one of the brands top "parent" models to get an overall viewpoint of their entire line. A word of caution … many reviews out in "webland" are not based on actual

use/testing. Actual use/testing allows me to add much more depth and accuracy to my reviews. In most cases an evaluation only is adequate only after I have done an actual review of at least one

purifier in a given brand. Most additional models are very similar to the "parent" purifier.

Each purifier review shows an overall rating score from 0 low to 100 high. Here is the criteria I use to rate each purifier.

Or go directly to my air purifier review top 10 page.

Top Brands A to H

Bionaire:

All Bionaire Reviews

The Bionaire Company was founded in Canada in 1977. The company does international business, but available information is a bit dated. They have many models new and old and

making sense of them all is a bit of a challenge. Why they have so many models is beyond me. The units are basic technology at best and in most cases are not recommended. Lower cost, but

definitely lower cleaning power. I currently have three reviews posted: the Bionaire PERMAtech BAP2000-U, the Bionaire BAP725 QUEITech, and the Bionaire BAP1250-U.

Blueair 402, the Blueair 250E, the Blueair 201, the AirPod, and the Eco-10. The Blueair purifiers are generally of simple design and do rate near the top.

Ecoquest Air Purifier Review:

All Ecoquest Reviews

Alpine Industries was founded in Minnesota in the Mid 80's. Bill Converse invented the technology that launched this unique line of air purifiers. Alpine had some

legal trouble in the late 90's for making claims that their air purifiers could do things they could not prove scientifically. The company changed hands in 2000 and became Ecoquest. Since,

Ecoquest has upgraded their technology, expanded engineering, established scientific proof, and partnered with leading organizations. I currently have six reviews posted: Fresh Air, Breeze AT,

Ecobox, Ductworx, Fresh Air To Go, Fresh Air Buddy, and Fresh Air Focus. Ecoquest is a major "new" technology made and manufactured in the USA.

Edenpure

All Edenpure Reviews

Air Purifier Review: Click Here for Edenpure Reviews. Edenpure is a division of SCI (Suarez Corporation Industries) based in Canton, Ohio. SCI was founded in 1968 by Benjamin D. Suarez from

his basement. 40 years later they are a a diversified marketing company with worldwide distribution. They market their products through standard retail channels as well as using direct sales.

I currently have three reviews posted: EdenPURE Whole House G-7, EdenPURE Area, and EdenPURE RoomPURE.

Friedrich

All Friedrich Reviews

Friedrich was founded by Ed Friedrich in Texas in 1883 and got its start as an air conditioning company. The company is still known mostly for its air conditioning units, but has an

expanded line of specialty air treatment products. They added air purification in the early 1990's. Unlike most companies in the air purifier industry, Friedrich has just one model

preferring to keep it simple. I currently have that one review posted: the Friedrich C-90B.

Holmes Air Purifier Review:

All Holmes Reviews

Holmes has been making air purifiers for

over 10 years. They brag of The Six-Sigma standard in quality, but need to focus more on cleaning power. They are owned under the Jarden Products umbrella as are Bionaire air purifiers. They

have many models new and old and making sense of them all is a bit of a challenge. Why they have so many models is beyond me. The units are basic technology at best and in most cases are not

recommended. Lower cost, but definitely lower cleaning power. Rate Air Purifiers. I currently have four reviews posted with a dozen or so mini-reviews: HEPA-Type Mini Tower HAP412-U, LifeLong

HEPA-Type Tower HAP1200-U, 99.97% HEPA for Large Rooms HAP650, and the Arm & Hammer Fresh 'N Clean Odor Grabber AOR240FC-U.

Honeywell Air Purifier Review:

All Honeywell Reviews

Honeywell can trace it roots back to 1885 when Albert Butz got started in the furnace business. They are now a huge 42 billion dollar company with air purification a small part of what

they do. Honeywell has a relationship with Kaz Company as Kaz handles most of the air purifier line today. They are listed as made in the USA. There are literally dozens of purifier models

availabel throughout the world, mostly at big box type (price based) stores. Not much for cleaning the air, they serve the lower end of the air purifier market. I currently have four reviews

posted with a dozen or so mini-reviews: Quietclean Tower HFD-120-Q, UV Air Treatment System RUVLAMP1, Enviracaire HEPA 50250, and the QuietCare 17005.

Hunter Air Purifier Review: Click Here for Hunter Reviews.

Hunter can trace it roots back to 1886 when John and James Hunter started the business selling ceiling fans. They now offer a full line of home comfort products – air purifiers,

humidifiers, thermostats, portable fans, and bath exhaust fans. Their headquarters are located in Memphis, TN. Hunter's purifiers are found in dozens of models throughout the USA, mostly at

big box, home improvement stores and on the internet. Most are average for cleaning the air; maybe a little above average for general consumer level, big box type models. Rate Air Purifiers. I

currently have three reviews posted with two dozen or so mini-reviews: Permalife 30547, QuietFlo 30785, and the HEPAtech 30378.

Air Purifier Comparison of Technologies

March 16, 2021 by john

STEP 1 in our Air Purifier Comparison is to understand the basic technologies. Air cleaning can be categorized by two basic terms: Passive or Active.

Some air purifiers include a combination of technologies. These could be Passive, Active or Passive/Active combining both active and passive technologies.

Let’s start with some basic definitions:

“Passive” an air cleaning process that occurs at or inside of the actual purifier. The air is drawn to the technology for cleaning.

“Active” an air cleaning process that occurs away from or outside of the actual purifier. The technology goes out to clean the air.

“Passive/Active” doesn’t apply directly to any one technology, but could be achieved if an air purifier contains multiple technologies.

Okay, this is an important distinction, so quick review: Passive = inside the purifier, Active = outside the purifier, and Passive/Active = combination of inside/outside the purifier.

Let’s Compare Each of the Key Passive Technologies:

  • HEPA Filters
  • Generic Filters
  • Pre Filters
  • Activated Carbon Filters – click here
  • NEEDS REWRITING

  • Antibacterial and Germicidal Filters
  • UV Ultraviolet – click here
  • NEEDS REWRITING

  • Electrostatic Precipitators/Charged Media Filters
  • Ionization
  • Ozone
  • Filterless

And Finally, Let’s Review the Related Topics:

  • Ozone Generators
  • Silent Air Purifier

Do you need a way to rank which technologies are important to you in your air purifier comparison? Take some scrap paper and rate each technology from 1 to 10 in importance to you. When finished you will have a better idea of which technologies you find most important. Don’t worry too much about details at this point, just having a general feeling of your likes and dislikes is what we’re after.

Done comparing technologies?

Then it’s time to move along to STEP 2 Category: We’ll decide which category of purifier you want and where you want to make your air cleaner.
