Air Purifier Reviews

Austin HealthMate Air Purifier Review

April 2, 2021 by john

Overview

The Austin Air Healthmate Air Purifier is a solidly made unit, and just about the only air purifier still made in US (I know one other small air purifier company down south). It is solidly made with a steel case and is a 4-stage air purifier. I have known about it for many years and the design hasn’t really changed in 25 years, which is both a testament to it’s durability but bad because it hasn’t integrated some of the more modern technology.

The owner Richard Taylor first became interested in air purification because of his wife’s troubles. Good people, good service, and a good company. Last I heard he spends a lot of time overseas.

I like the Austin Air Healthmate Unit for the cases where people have lung conditions and severe problems with allergies. It’s good sized HEPA and Carbon/Zeolite and that’s about it. For the average home however, or mild allergies, I like other models that include UV and negative ions. I don’t like the old brush motors inside them as they are noisier, use more electricity and wear out faster compared to the brushless motors. For that reason I won’t sleep with my Austin Air Healthmate in my bedroom.

4 Stages of Purification

1 – HEPA – Best for allergies and asthma

2 – Pre-Filter – gathers large particles like dust and hair and makes the HEPA last longer

3 – Carbon (Optional) – you pay more for the version that adds Carbon for absorbing fumes and gases

4 – Zeolite (optional – is mixed in with Carbon) – Similar to carbon in that it absorbs fumes and gases. Zeolite is an abundant mineral that comes from volcanic ash. Often found in cat litter mix because it absorbs odor.

Pros & Cons

Pros

1 – Made in the U.S.

2 – Good Service

3 – HEPA for dust and pollen

4 – Good sized Carbon and Zeolite for gas and odors

Cons

1 – A little pricey

2 – Loud on high

3 – Expensive filter replacements

4 – Doesn’t do much for viruses, germs or bacteria

Conclusion

I recommend the Austin HealthMate Air Purifier for people with extreme allergies or sensitive immune systems. While it is more expensive than others, and leaves out any germ/bacteria/virus-fighting technology, it has above average HEPA and Carbon/Zeolite filters for those people who are very sensitive. For most households I would go for the air purifiers that include more technologies, and that cost less money (for the purifier itself as well as the replacement filters).

Bionaire BAP825 Air Purifier Review

April 2, 2021 by john

Overview

The Bionaire line of air purifiers are some of the less expensive air purifiers on the market. My review starts with the Bionaire BAP825 air purifier model, their top unit. This a very inexpensive model that is a HEPA air purifier, and that’s about it. It does have negative ions as well. These technologies are reviewed further down the page.

My neighbor, a smoker, was throwing one of them out and hence the video review below. This is a very simple, inexpensive unit. You will have to change the filters in it every 3-4 months depending on conditions. I’d love to say more about it, but there’s not much to the Bionaire models to begin with so I’ll leave the video and the spec sheets below to give you an idea whether it fills your needs.

Bionaire Air Purifier Video Review

Stages of Purification

Now let’s take a look at the filters and technology for cleaning the air. The Bionaire Bap825 air purifier has 3 stages

Stage 1 HEPA – Best for allergies and asthma HEPA comes in all sizes and shapes. HEPA captures dust and pollen up to 99.97%.

Stage 2 Negative ION. By far the least expensive and least effective air purifier technology it has an interesting benefit. While negative ions can kill some mold, odor, and smoke the greater benefit is the positive impact negative ions have on brain function and lung tissues. Negative ions are what makes ocean air and mountain air so invigorating. Think of negative ions as “vitamins of the air”.

Stage 3 Activated Carbon. Absorbs odor and gases.

Pros and Cons

Pros

1 – Inexpensive

2 – Includes HEPA

3 – Remote control

4 – Power oscillating housing for direction air flow

5 – Filter change indicator light

6 – Attractive sleek design, unobtrusive, Space Saving, Easy to clean

7 – On/Off Ionizer

Cons

1 – Loud

2 – Expensive HEPA filters (for their size that is)

3 – Covers only a very small area – 180 sq. ft.

4 – Very loud at all speeds

5 – Puts out heat while running

6 – Power consumption: low 50, med 90, High 150 watts

7 – customer service slow – large call centers so not possible to have consistency

8 – Oscillator engineering problems – unreliable performance

9 – No prefilters

10 – Not a true Hepa Filter

11 – Prone to excessive vibration

12 – not good on pollen, mold, nothing to kill bacteria, viruses

Specifications and Technologies

6. Noise Levels 2

7. Ease of Use 10

8. Warranty 3

9. Customer Service/Reputation (reviews) 2

10. Price Value 5

Score: 45 = Fair

Conclusion

If you’re trying to get rid of dust and pollen, and can’t afford more than 80, I would buy the Bionaire BAP825. The reason my neighbor was throwing his out – after 6 months the replacement costs were more than the cost of the purifier. Plus being a smoker the machine didn’t do a great job. He would have been better off with a machine that includes the washable electrostatic plates.

Charcoal Air Purifiers

April 2, 2021 by john

Charcoal air purifiers operate by absorbing gases from the air. However the size and cost of a charcoal air purifier filter can vary greatly.

It is also used in water purifiers, and military gas masks, because it can absorb chlorine and other chemicals in the water, and toxic gases in the air. Once the charcoal has absorbed enough gas to fill all the available cells (which can take a day or many months, depending on the amount of pollutants in the air) the charcoal filters must be replaced.

Charcoal Filter Deception

Charcoal filters are one of the most profitable product for air purifier companies. Charcoal is relatively inexpensive, very abundant in nature and it is the amount of charcoal (by weight) that determines how effective the charcoal air purifier or filter will be. Charcoal is limited in how many gases and odors it will absorb. The range of how much charcoal is tremendous. I have seen air purifiers (EX: Friedrich, Alen) which uses a very small amount of Charcoal (carbon) which is impregnated onto a very thin filter frame. The markup to replace these small charcoal or carbon filters is incredible.

One example of abuse is the Oreck Air Purifier, whose infomercials tout that you never have to replace the filter. In my opinion that is simply pure deception through words. The charcoal (carbon) filter in it (SEE THE VIDEO BELOW) will last only a few months, even less if you are a smoker, and you will have to replace it with a new one. The replacements are both expensive and very small as youll see in the video. The way Oreck gets away with this is by using the term Odor Absorber instead of calling it a filter (it is a filter in everyone else’s opinion).

Oh well, people buy it, and such is the infomercial game of words. At least the Oreck Truman Cell plates will help with some smoke and odors.

Overpriced Charcoal Filters

Free Charcoal Filters

There are a few air purifiers which incorporate a more reasonable strategy to adding Charcoal into an air purifier they save you the cost of buying Charcoal or carbon filters by building it right into the HEPA filter. Here is link showing one such model.

Do You Need Charcoal In Your Air Purifier?

The truth is that air fresheners and burning incense can cause allergic reactions in people, and of course merely cover the smells and odors. The fact that there are thousands of VOCs (artificial gases and chemical fumes found in plastic products, new carpeting, and construction) is reason enough to prevent health problems from chemicals in the air. Many of these chemical VOCs do not have an odor and some will claim that inhaling enough of them over time can and will cause cancer. I don’t like to use scare tactics but it is better to play it safe by adding a charcoal air purifier to your health strategy. You wont know there is a problem in the air until you have some health problems, and you may never find out it was in the air.

Activated carbon actually attracts other chemicals to it. Once attracted to the activated carbon in the charcoal air purifier, the chemicals become bonded to the carbon. Because there are millions of little pores on the activated carbon in a charcoal air purifier, you wont have to worry about replacing the charcoal air purifier filters that often. In fact, one filter can last for nine months or more!.

If you buy bigger filters, you’ll have more activated carbon to trap scents. In fact, the largest charcoal air purifier filters you can find may actually last for two years before you need to change them.

Conclusion

Charcoal, or activated carbon, is a must for your air purifier strategy because of its superior ability to remove toxic chemicals and odors. The two things to consider in your research to find the best one is to consider:

1) How much odor and chemicals does my house have?

2) Does the model I am looking for have a reasonable replacement cost?

The bigger the need, the bigger the amount of charcoal (by weight) should be factored in.

There are some air purifiers which save you the cost of buying Charcoal or carbon filters by building it into the HEPA purifier.

Air Oasis Air Purifier Review

April 2, 2021 by john

Overview

I really hoping the Air Oasis Air Purifier Models had something unique and effective (I had my fingers crossed) because they are one of the only Made-in-the-USA products (as they claim). It does have something unique, but effectiveness will be challenged in this review.

I was excited by the idea of buying American. However on further review the claim reads: “it’s assembled in the US”. I’m not really sure it’s “made in the US” after some research on it. [Please correct me if you know for sure]

While there are several models available this review will focus on the technology (which is used across their models) in the Air Oasis 3000 G3 Residential Air Sanifier Purifier. The Air Oasis Air Purifier weighs in a mere 6 pounds, has no fan, yet claims that it can be more effective at time (emphasis on “at times”) than a HEPA filter. The two primary technologies it uses are reviewed in more detail below.

[Note: I am still in the process of doing a video review and receiving more info on whether the nickel nano technology has superior effects on viruses, germs, etc.]

Air Oasis Company

Dr. Jeff Bennert, co-owner of the Air Oasis Air Purifier Company, is a Naturopath, author and Practitioner. You’ll see references to his involvement with Coral Calcium and other nutritional products.

Stages of Purification

Now let’s take a look at the technology for cleaning the air. The air oasis air purifier has 2 stages

Stage 1 Nano nickel HCT PCO technology. Works to enhance UV, similar to nano titanium Dioxide. only works with UV-C. Enhances the UV effect on the air.

Stage 2 UV – C light. According to them a special treatment on the lamps enhances the life and function of the UV over regular UV light in other air purifiers.

Pro’s & Con’s

Pros

1 – Includes an advanced Nano Nickel process to enhance UV

2 – Includes UV-C for killing germs, viruses, mold, etc.

3 – Covers a large area

4 – No fan (which is a pro and a con) which saves electricity and makes it silent

Con’s

1 – A bit expensive

2 – I don’t recommend it for dust or pollen because it lacks HEPA

3 – Expensive replacement parts

4 – Not a good allergy air purifier in most cases

5 – No Fan – while it saves electricity and runs quiet it also moves no air which relates to it’s lack of pollen and dust removal.

Specifications and Technologies

Air Oasis Air Purifier AO3000

Retail Price:

Purification Technologies: 2

Square Footage: 1000-3000 SQ. Ft.

Replacement Filter Costs:

Decibel Level: 0

Pros – Good for viruses, germs

Cons- Not good for pollen or dust

Warranty – 30 day money back then 3 year warranty

Number of Speeds – 0

Weight: 7 Pounds

Air Purifier Rating

1. Technologies Included: (out of of 10 technologies) 2

2. Particle Removal (Allergens, Dust) 2

3. Immune System Threats (Germs, Virus, etc.)9

4. Gas Removal (Odor, Chemicals, Smoke) 4

5. Longevity/Quality 8

6. Noise Levels 10

7. Ease of Use 9

8. Warranty 5

9. Customer Service/Reputation (reviews) 5

10. Price Value 3

Score: 57 = Fair

Conclusion

If you were looking to sanitize the air this air purifier might work for you. If you want to remove dust, pollen, and allergens then this air purifier will let you down. The claims of being silent and efficient in it’s low power consumption are true – simply because it doesn’t have a fan. However the fact that it doesn’t move air speaks to the fact that it doesn’t remove dust or pollen.

I have no doubt that it is better than an ionic breeze air purifier, which similarly had no fan and used pennies a day. However I prefer a unit with a HEPA filter for the reason that it cleans the air.

Air Purifier – Best Odor Killers

April 2, 2021 by john

Overview

Which is best? The air purifier best odor killer all depends on which odor problem you have. There are six (of ten) available technologies used in air purifiers that are effective for killing or eliminating odors. Of those ozone is the fastest air purifier odor killer , but unfortunately also the one technology that can harm the lungs of people and pets. But depending on your odor problem there are 5 other possibilities.

On this page we will:

1) Review these 6 technologies and how each treats odors.

2) Compare the pro’s and con’s of each.

3) List which air purifier best odor technology works by problem (pets, smoke, etc.)4) Offer some suggestions, which may include several of these technologies.

Air Purifier Best Odor Killers

Ozone – Extremely effective for killing odors, ozone is a highly unstable substance which attaches itself easily to gas particles. (see the pro’s and con’s for the dangers of ozone).

Carbon – activated carbon, or charcoal, is a natural mineral that has millions of tiny pores. When odor passes around carbon it is easily attracted to and gets caught within the tiny pores within carbon. Once these pores are filled then the carbon must be replaced.

Zeolite- Similar to carbon zeolite is a naturally occurring substance which has millions of tiny pores and microscopic crevices. Often used in cat litter zeolite is a natural volcanic compound. However for some reason (which I don’t understand) zeolite is not used in many air purifiers.

Electrostatic – If you’ve seen the infomercials for Oreck then you know about the “washable truman cell”. This is nothing special in the air purifier world and is also called electrostatic plates or grids. These charged plates can often kill gases and odors as they pass through the electrical field created across the plates.

UVC light- UV isn’t so much of an air purifier best odor killer, but because it can inhibit mold and mildew I mention it here.

Negative Ion- A negative ion machine creates ion particles that go out into the room that are effective in killing odors.

Ozone Pro’s and Con’s

Pro’s

1 – Great for smoke odor

2 – Good for pet odors

3 – Great for killing mold and mildew in the room

4 – Great for killing kitchen odors

Con’s

1 – Too much ozone can harm the lungs

2 – Does not help with dust or pollen

3 – Can irritate animals (it can kill birds)

Carbon Pro’s & Con’s

Pro’s

1 – Great for smoke

2 – Great for kitchen odors

3 – Great for pet odors

4 – Great for chemical fumes and odors

Con’s

1 – Has to be replaced periodically

2 – Most carbon filters are overpriced

Carbon is the air purifier best odor absorber.

Zeolite Pro’s & Con’s

Pro’s

1 – Great for new car smells

2 – Great for kitchen odors

3 – Great for pet odors

4 – Great for chemical fumes and odors

5 – Can be re-used by putting it in the sun

Con’s

1 – Hard to find in it’s pure form

2 – Not available for most air purifiers

Electrostatic Pro’s & Con’s

Pro’s

1 – Good for smoke

2 – Good for kitchen odors

3 – OK for pet odors

4 – Fair for chemical fumes and odors

5 – Washable

Con’s

1 – Doesn’t help with dust

2 – Won’t do much for mold/mildew

UV light Pro’s & Con’s

Pro’s

1 – Kills mold, germs, bacteria

Con’s

1 – Will not kill many odors

Negative Ion Pro’s & Con’s

Pro’s

1 – Inexpensive

2 – Kills mold and mildew

3 – Good for general odors (cooking, etc.)

4 – Safe (and in fact improves the health of lungs)

5 – Good for smoke6 – Good for pet odors

Con’s

1 – Not as effective as the first 3 technologies

2 – Relatively passive

Air Purifier Best Odor Killer – By Problem

Pet Odors- Carbon and/or Zeolite. Then electrostatic. A combination of carbon and electrostatic is ideal, with negative ion to kill odor and create healthier air for the pets.

Kitchen Odors – Carbon and/or Zeolite. Then electrostatic.

Smoke- Ozone (just not with you in the room). Then Carbon and/or Zeolite. Then electrostatic.

Chemicals- Carbon and/or Zeolite. You want to absorb the chemical fumes as much as possible.

Mold and Mildew – Ozone – without you being in the room. Treat the room with Ozone. Once the mold is gone then maintain with negative ions. UV light can also help, but not for big mold problems.

Conclusion & Suggestions

Here are my suggestions:

1) Because most air purifier manufacturers overcharge for carbon filter replacement filters look carefully at the air purifier comparison chart (see link below) for carbon based purifiers .

2) Sometimes cat litter can be used if it is high in zeolite for problem conditions

3) Using an ozone air purifier to “treat” a room (leave the room to do this, and air the room out for several hours afterward) is an effective way to eliminate odors of all kinds. Since Ozone purifiers can be expensive negative ions and carbon might be a more affordable (and safer) alternative.

Best Price Air Purifiers

April 2, 2021 by john

OVERVIEW:

In my search for the best price air purifier it’s ironic that the one I found is also one of the best in terms of technology – the incredible Alive Air Mini!

My Experience With It

I have owned one of these for 3 years now and it runs 24/7 in my bedroom. While I own larger air purifiers I wanted something quiet, efficient, and with affordable filters. The reason I wanted one in the bedroom is:

1) Most dust is skin cells, and we shed the most during sleep. (It’s disgusting, I know)

2) Dust mites in sheets and pillowcases live on skin cells. The more dust is pulled out of the air the less mites

3) If the air purifier has negative ions you will sleep better, according to research in Russia (until I read that I thought my improved sleep was all in my head. I definitely sleep better)

4) I went this whole winter without catching a cold or flu. The ultraviolet light in this air purifier kills germs and viruses.

Why Alot??

Many people have called me asking: “‘ what’s the best price air purifier on the market for a small room?”. They didn’t want to spend a let of  dollars for an air purifier. I was hard-pressed to find something I actually liked until I found this one.

There is no reason to buy an air purifier that is bigger than the space, yet most small air purifiers only use 1 or two technologies. This has 6.

Stages of Purification

What makes it the best price air purifier ? The Alive Air Mini Air Purifier has 6 stages:

Pro’s and Con’s

Pro’s

1 – Affordable Price

2 – Affordable replacement HEPA

3 – 6 Stages of Technology

4 – Quiet operation

5 – Covers 400 square feet

Con’s

1 – 400 square feet makes it for small rooms only

Oreck XL Air Purifier Review

April 2, 2021 by john

Overview

In this Oreck XL Air Purifier review I’ll be revealing the story behind this air purifier, from it’s manufacture in China, to showing you many of the pro’s and con’s of the most well known air purifier. The video below will also take you inside the air purifier to show you some of the inner working of this machine.

By the end of this Oreck XL air purifier review you’ll have a better ability to determine whether it is a good idea for your household or not. The newer Oreck XL also includes UV light.

Infomercial Heaven

Having produced several national infomercials I know the inside story behind infomercials, and Oreck was very fortunate that the Sharper Image Ionic Breeze was removed from TV because of high Ozone levels. This paved the way for the Oreck XL to enter the limelight.

To run an infomercial successfully you need at least a 5 (ideally 7) times markup to pay all the expenses, unlike store markups. Online products can often compete by lowering expenses below store markups. Any infomercial on TV that succeeds has to follow this formula, and it gives you idea of the profit built into any item.

Made in China

One of my friends was the first TV spokesperson for the Oreck XL air purifier and according to him the unit cost Oreck 35 to make in China. I know the factory, it is one we have used (they recently changed factories) to make other products. The “Truman Cell” is made in Japan for quality (and perhaps so the Chinese don’t duplicate it). I’m sure the cost is higher since it was first on TV, and now has UV light added.

Most air purifiers today are made in China today because of the low production cost. Plus the quality level is much higher than China used to be known for.

Oreck’s Dubious Claims

The Oreck XL air purifier infomercial claims several things which I take issue to:

1) “You never have to change the filter” – The small charcoal “odor eater” is a small charcoal filter which needs to be replaced every 3-5 months and costs 59 for 2. It absorbs odors and chemicals. Watch the video to get an idea. Oreck get’s away with saying “no filters” by calling it an “odor eater”.

2) “Removes Dust and Pollen” – Without a HEPA filter the “ionic” plates (Truman Cells) will do a less than adequate job of removing pollen and dust. Some dust will collect because of the static charge. This is not your best bet if you have allergies.

2) “Quiet” – I found my Oreck to be neither quiet (at 28 db on low) and especially not when it would make it’s infamous zapping noise in the truman cell. The zapping noise can happen (and yes it’s an electrical zapping) from dust across the electrically charged plates and from bugs being electrocuted across the plates.

Stages of Purification

Now let’s take a look at the filters and technology for cleaning the air. In this Oreck Xl Air Purifier review I am including the UV light of the newer version. the older Oreck XL is no longer sold by Oreck. The oreck now has 5 stages:

Stage 1 This small washable prefilter holds dust (see filters in the video)

Stage 2 A very small carbon filter traps smoke and odors (it be replaced every few months and are ordered separately)

Stage 3 The Ionizer plates (they call them Truman Cells) which attracts pollution and kills odors. This is the primary way that the Oreck cleans the air. These ionic plates – charged plates (+ and – ) – attract soot and other airborne particles like a magnet.

Stage 4 Negative Ionization – creates healthy air and will kill some odors and mold

Stage 5 New Helioshield – Ultraviolet light for killing germs and viruses

Pro’s and Con’s

Pro’s

1 – Now includes UV light

2 – Convenient stores for repairs

3 – Washable

Con’s

1 – Overpriced for the square footage

2 – Does not include HEPA (best for dust and pollen)

3 – Small Carbon filters are very expensive

4 – The Warranty is pro-rated (only 3 years)

5 – Will only treat a small 8 x10 room

Conclusion

OK, I’m not a big fan of the Oreck having owned several. Without HEPA it is not going to do a great job on allergies. Given that it will only cover a little over 200 square feet (on high speed) it is considered a small room air purifier. A lot of money for a small air purifier which does not carry the best dust technology.

If you have allergies I would look at the comparison chart on this site for a better choice.  Hepa filters get filled with smoke so fast a washable ionic air purifier is a more affordable way to go.

Sharp FP-P40CX Air Purifier Review

April 2, 2021 by john

Overview

I’ll start by saying that in this air purifier review sharp FP-P40CX that I really like the filters in it, and the technology. Plus the initial cost is very reasonable. My primary complaints are the replacement filter costs are very high, the Warranty is short (1 year) and the square footage is a bit low. But if you are looking for a good mid-sized bedroom air purifier for allergies keep reading.

Purchased all over the world the Sharp FP-P40CX is one of several sharp plasmacluster air purifiers which were first introduced in 2001. They have sold over 22 million according to their website. It’s made in China where 99% of all air purifiers today are made but were designed in Japan. Japan fell in love with this model during the SARS scare.

Unlike the FPP models many of the newer Plasmacluster air purifiers (which include the KC model line – KC-C70U, KCC100U, and C150U) now include built in humidifiers in which you add water to a small reservoir. I still own a Plasmacluster Sharo FP-P60CX which is being discontinued in favor of the smaller FP-P40CX (the primary difference the Sharp FP-P60CX covers more square footage.)

Air Purifier Review – Sharp FP-P40CX

Stages of Purification

Now let’s take a look at the filters and technology for cleaning the air. The Sharp FP-P40CX air purifier has 4-5 stages

Stage 1 HEPA. Although a bit pricey when it comes time to replace it this good sized HEPA does a good job of holding dust and pollen.

Stage 2 Carbon – A good sized 12 OZ bag with several carbon pockets it removes gas, odors and smoke. (very pricey to replace @ 70).

Stage 3 Pre-Filter – This washable filter is like a screen door, catching hair and dust which extends the life of the HEPA filter. While Sharp suggests you can vacuum the HEPA on occasion make sure you vacuum it “thorough” the pre-filter.

Stage 4 Positive and negative ions. The unique “Plasmacluster” technology allows you to alternate between health negative ions, positive ions which can destroy some germs, or both. A nice option.

FPP40CX – It’s A Small Room Air Purifier

Because it only covers 232 square feet the Sharp is more of a small room air purifier. On high speed it gets a bit noisy, and the machine shakes a bit side to side (smoothly mind you, but it does move). On low it is very quiet, but does not move a lot of air. The trade off for low energy usage and quieter fan (than the 60CX) explains the smaller square footage.

It has a “pollen feature” but to be honest I don’t get it – it just seems to alternate the fan speed. I can only figure that it “sounded good” in the marketing department. While it is very quiet in the low speed mode (4 speeds) it doesn’t emit enough air at that speed to do much of anything. The carbon filter is said to be washable, however getting water inside an air purifier (and carbon retains chlorine from the water) may not be the best idea. The carbon filter has bags of carbon which, while a good weight to the carbon means it will absorb more gas than most purifiers, have large gaps above and below the bags.

Pro’s and Con’s

Pro’s

1 – Well Made

2 – Quieter than most air purifiers

3 – Includes HEPA and a good Carbon filtration

4 – Nice “human-friendly” design. Has an on/off button for night time sleeping, and variable remote controls.

Con’s

1 – Short 1 year parts and labor warranty

2 – Very Expensive (but good) filter replacements

3 – A bit pricey, but a good value

4 – The yearly operating costs are high. While it is very energy efficient the replacement carbon and HEPa can set you back 180 (Wasn’t that close to the cost of the machine to begin with?)

5 – The low speed is very quiet (17Db) but also completely useless as it moves no air.

6 – A bit noisy on high

Conclusion

In this air purifier review the Sharp FP-P40CX is definitely one of my top 10. It has better-than-average carbon filtration and HEPA size. While you may end up paying more for the initial cost (and too much for the replacement filters) than you will for a Honeywell, Oreck, or similar models you’re money will be better spent getting something with much greater filtration.

It’s a durable model, relatively quiet, and has nice features like an on/off control for the lights (You’ll know how important that is when you try and sleep a night with an air purifier light on). With a list price of 299.99 current prices online run from 250 to 260 delivered. The Warranty is only 1 year parts and labor – which was a bit of a head-scratcher for me. Why would Sharp have such a limited warranty? However I have found that the one I own has been dependable over several years.

If you have allergies and want a good small room air purifier it may be a good choice.

Ionic Air Purifier Reviews and Test Results

Ionic Air Purifier Reviews and Test Results

Overview

I was surprised to see that many people still search for the Ionic Breeze Air Purifier model (Sharper Image) because it was pulled by the Federal Trade Commission quite a few years ago for potential health hazards. The hazard: Ozone production. For many consumers the name “Ionic Breeze” became synonymous with “Air Purifier” because of their infomercial success. Their fall open the doors for the Oreck Air Purifier ton take center stage on infomercial.

I did a search myself for “Ionic Air Purifier Reviews” recently and found that Sharper Image (even though they went bankrupt) has a site which sells several different models under the name. I will do another review on these other “Overpriced” models at another time (there is not much interest in them).

Since Ionic Breeze died a sudden death you might want to watch some of the “Top 10 Air Purifier” videos via the menu on the left.

Ionic Breeze Purifier Claims

The Sharper Image Ionic Breeze did well on infomercial because it touted “You never had to change the filter” and “It runs silently” and “It uses a penny a day in electricity. Let’s examine these points:

1. Never have to change the filter. By sticking to washable electrostatic (charged plates that attract some pollution and dust) they ignored the more effective HEPA (cloth) filters. Electrostatic is good for smoke and odor, and that’s about it.

2. It runs silently. Because there was no fan motor in the machine it counted on the natural air flow in the room, through the electrostatic plates to clean the air, along with the negative ions going out to kill some gases. Not a very effective way to clean the air, but better than nothing.

3. Runs on a penny a day. This is because it has no fan motor.

Stages of Purification

Now let’s take a look at the filters and technology for cleaning the air. The ionic breeze air purifier has 1 stage:

Stage 1 Electrostatic Plates (also called Ionizing electrostatic precipitator). – These washable plates attract positively and negatively charged particles in the air like pollution, VOC’s and some dust (but not alot of dust or pollen) Two thin wires positively charge (ionize) airborne particles and trap them on a negatively charged removable collection grid made of three to five steel plates. Air from the room is drawn in by the electrostatic forces, not by a fan. This air movement, the “Zenion effect”, produces the breeze users feel.

Pro’s & Con’s

Pro’s

1 – Inexpensive

2 – No replacement filters

3 – Destroys odours, kills germs, smells sweet to some.

4 – Control panel conveniently on top of tower.

5 – If the user forgets to clean the plates, the red light comes on and the unit shuts itself down. (looses efficiency as plates get dirty)

6- Collector plates are well-built, and sturdy

7- Portable, Uses minimal power – Energy efficient

Con’s

1 – No Hepa (best for pollen and dust)

2 – Creates ozone (harmful for sensitive lungs)

3 – Does not help with germs, bacteria, viruses

4 – Harmful to lungs, eyes and nasal passages in that it damages surface tissues (The half-life of ozone in air is approximately 72 hours (3 days) at room temperaturemaking it uncontrollable by consumers.)

5 – It moves very little air

6 – Some users complain about the brightness of the red light indicator at night

7 – Frequent cleaning required of the plates – every 4 or 5 days

8 – Internal ionizing wires need cleaning after eight to ten days. This will stop a humming noise caused by particle build-up on the charging wire

9 – Like all ionizers, the unit can create a black wall effect if left too long in one spot.

10 – Annoying sparking and crackling noises may develop when collector plates and ionizer wires are not kept perfectly clean

Conclusion

If you have allergies, find an air purifier with HEPA and skip the Ionic Breeze. If you have asthma DO NOT USE THIS MODEL, as it does create some Ozone which can irritate lungs. However if you smoke cigarettes then this might be an inexpensive alternative way to clear smoke. You won’t have to buy a HEPA filter which gets clogged with nicotine.

Because Sharper Image went bankrupt (someone else bought the name to sell the current version) you’ll want to keep that in mind.

I hope these Ionic Air Purifier Reviews have been of help.

Newport 9000 Air Purifier Review

April 1, 2021 by john

Overview

A company called Real Spirit USA markets the Newport 9000 purifier which they sell to major big box brands and on their website. Their website name is Ultra Pure and/or Advanced PureAir.

Most people notice that the Newport 9000 is similar in features and appearance to the AliveAir (AliveAir.com), AirpodCleaner (airpodcleaner.com), and the Surround Air “Multi-tech XJ-3800 Intelli-pro” (also sold by Heaven Fresh). Despite the similar design, and similar technologies there is more to the story. In this article we will point out the differences.

Newport 9000 vs. Intelli-Pro

The original design does go back a few years when Surround Air, Real Spirit (Ultra-Pure/Alive Air) approached the factory which makes them in China. The factory is the same that now makes the Oreck Air Purifier. Oreck came in to work with that factory years after they were already working with Real Spirit.

Surround Air (which also sells to Heaven Fresh) began selling the original model as “Intelli-Pro”. The principles from Real Spirit (AliveAir & Ultra-Pure) chose to redesign and upgrade many of the inner-workings of the model. This included upgraded circuit boards, a upgrade to the fan motor, a remote control, and improved electronics.

Real Spirit sold their first revised version as the “Newport 9000”.

The Newport 9000 Air Purifier, once popular for its effectiveness in purifying indoor air, are no longer in production.

As an alternative I recommend considering the COWAY AP-1512HH Mighty Air Purifier as a worthy replacement.

It has gained a reputation for exceptional performance and advanced features.

Company History

The principle owners of Real Spirit are:

Dr. Malcolm Currie, Chairman, who is the former chairman of Hughes Aircraft and Delco Electronics. He was also the design head for the EV-1, the first mass-produced electric car which unfortunately was killed by GM. It was ahead of its time. He and Richard Mayer started Currie Technologies, which is the primary producer of electric motors for just about every electric scooter, skateboard, and small electric motor in the world. Currie Tech provides scooters and skateboards to Mongoose, and Schwinn amongst others.

Richard Mayer, CEO, serves as the President of Currie Technologies, Inc. Richard is an electric motor genius, which is why Dr. Curry created Currie Technologies with him. Mayer originally owned an electric Motor Car Company which sold electric cars to celebrities like Madonna, and Ed Begley Jr.

From Newport 9000 to Alive Air/Shield

Currie Technologies and Richard Mayer is the reason for ongoing “redesigns” and upgrades of this air purifier took a major leap for both Real Spirit and its Alive Air Division. After selling the Newport for several years they redesigned the fan motor in the AliveAir machine (and the “Shield” model) to be able to run for over 100,000 hours (Almost 12 years of continuous use). It also increased the square footage, and lowered the noise slightly.

Since the fan motor is the major expense in an air purifier, and primary factor in longevity, this represents a major upgrade. They also added safety features (shut-off switches) within the filters of the machine. Word is they are also in the process of upgrading the filters to be bacteriostatic, adding another level to the ability to treat the air.

This redesign brings the Alive Air purifier up to a 5 Year Warranty, whereas the Surround Air Intelli-pro (with the older motor) is 2. The Newport is 1.

9 Stages of Technology

Now let’s take a look at the filters and technology for cleaning the air. The Newport air purifier has 7 stages of Purification, and 2 stages of monitoring and maintenance.

Stage 1 Pre-filter. To capture dust and hair.

Stage 2 Electrostatic. To capture soot and pollution.

Stage 3 HEPA. To capture dust, dirt, and pollen.

Stage 4 Tio2. Kills germs, bacteria and Viruses when used with UV.

Stage 5 UV or Ultraviolet. Used in hospitals to kill germs, mold, viruses, bacteria.

Stage 6 Carbon. To remove chemical fumes, odors and gases.

Stage 7 Negative ION. To kill odors and mold spores out in the room (walls, etc.) and re-enliven the air.

Stage 8 Air Sensors. Pollen, dust and Odor sensors monitor the room and change the fan speed with problems.

Stage 9 Filter Monitor. This really just a timed sensor which tells you when to clean the washable filters and check the HEPA filter.

Pro’s and Con’s

Pro’s

1 – Good price

2 – Includes HEPA

3 – Includes UV and Tio2

4 – Easy to use

Top 10 Best Air Purifiers 2020

April 1, 2021 by john

Not many new air purifiers have been produced this year.  Only upgrades. Prices have remained roughly the same as last year but with fewer sales. I still find that most companies overcharge for for replacement filters. I’m also hoping that some companies can bring production back to the U.S. to create some jobs. But you’ll find good value in the reviews below to spend your money wisely.

The following air purifier ratings and reviews here are based on spec sheets, good overall value for the average home and many consumer issues such as warranty/guarantee terms, filter replacement costs, square footage, consumer feedback, etc.

How To Choose The Best Air Purifier For You ?

People call me confused about which air purifier to pick. They all sound good, don’t they? Here are 3 ways to remove the confusion and get clear about which is right for you:

Step 1) Review and learn the ten air purifier technologies so you can know which of the 10 you need. The Top Air Purifier Home Page has a video which explains all 10. Many air purifiers only use 3-4 technologies and I suggest looking for more comprehensive models. In many cases you’ll actually save money.

Your problem (EX: pollen, dust, Mold, Allergies, Chemical fumes, Smoke, exhaust fumes, etc.) each requires different technologies.

Step 2) Determine the square footage. Most air purifier square footage is based on 7 foot ceilings. Don’t buy one that is too under-powered for the room size.

Step 3) Review the comparison chart and choose a few that match your budget and technology you picked.

Step 4) Watch the video reviews, read the detailed specifications and comments about each model using the information from the preceding steps.

NOTE: The Top 10 Best Air Purifiers 2020 are not always the best sellers. They are simply presented to help you in your search for the one that fits your needs (For Example: Many air purifiers that are good for pollen won’t do a thing for odor).

#1 The Alive Air Purifier

There are several things I really like about the Alive Air Purifier which show that some thought went into this model: 1) 9 technologies make it one of the most complete air purifiers 2) The affordable HEPA filters which include HEPA 3) The coverage at over 800 Square Feet and 4) The fan motor which is rated for over 100,000 hours of continuous use. Free Shipping and a great price at 297 via the link below make it a great buy.

#2 AirPodCleaner SMT5

The Airpodcleaner SMT5 is a model I have used in my bedroom with success. With 5 technologies – HEPA, Carbon, UV, Tio2 and Negative Ion – It does a good job on Pollen, Dust and Odor. You can also vacuum the HEPA every few weeks and get additional life from the HEPA saving you money. Quiet enough for the bedroom and doesn’t take up much space.

#3 Rabbit Air Purifier

All the Rabbit Air Purifier models are well designed and run well. I love the design, the technology and the function. A bit less robust in technology (good for dust, pollen, and odor) and more “robust” in filter cost (too expensive) it nonetheless has many qualities to them.

#4 Austin Air

One of the few remaining U.S. manufacturers the Austin Air is basic, yet has some specific usage for people with environmental sensitivities. I recommend it for people with lung and/or severe allergy problems. The Austin Air Purifier line, while a bit expensive, has a basic design. The filters – HEPA and Carbon or Zeolite – are larger (and hence much more expensive) than most but will pull more chemicals and particles out of the air. For a normal healthy family (with maybe some allergies) I go more for other models, but for the super sensitive people I might lean toward the Austin.

#5 Blue Air Purifier – 540

Very solidly made the Blue Air Purifier has good HEPA coverage for pollen and dust. The replacement filters are super expensive. They have a tobacco filter which I sometimes recommend for smokers and cigar aficionados. A bit pricey when you can get more for less money it is a very solidly constructed unit.

For more information and more reviews go to BlueAir Purifier.

#6 Sharp Plasmacluster Air Purifier

The Sharp air purifier is a good mid-range unit. Again the filter replacements are expensive but the HEPA does a good job. The one I had did seem to vibrate some but that didn’t seem to affect the performance.

#8 Alen Air

I’m not quite sure what to say about the Alen Air Purifier. It works fine, has several technologies but nothing really stands out about it from other similar (and sometimes less expensive models).

1. Technologies Included: (out of of 10 technologies) 3

2. Particle Removal (Allergens, Dust) 9

#9 Honeywell 50250 Air Purifier

It’s a beast! It’s a big round fan with a HEPA filter basically. A bit loud and the filters are expensive. I’d recommend it for dust only if you have a space big enough in the middle of the room for it.

1. Technologies Included: (out of of 10 technologies) 2

#10 Friedrich Air Cleaner

I probably could have found a better #10 model but since Consumer Reports rated this model as one of their best (I absolutely can’t imagine why, unless someone was paid off!) I’ll say a few words. It looks and weights as much as a doghouse. The many electrostatic plates create ozone which can be an irritant. The only good news is that you won’t have to but HEPA filters. I think this is more for a garage or factory with chemicals and fumes in the air. Bend your knees when you lift it!

Top 10: Best Home Air Purifier

March 28, 2021 by john

Whole Home, Apartment or Business. It is tougher to clean larger areas cost effectively. There are several excellent solutions below.

1st Place: Ecoquest Fresh Air – Excellent Rating

MSRP 747. The Ecoquest Fresh Air stands out as a unique air purifier from a unique company. It uses Active technology which means the purifier actually reaches beyond the unit and cleans the air. This purifier is effective and can clean up to 3000 sqft. The Fresh Air is cost effective to maintain, but does take periodic cleaning to keep working in top form. Best home air purifier for the whole house. Read full review for more details: Click Here for full review.

2nd Place: Ecoquest Breeze AT – Excellent Rating

MSRP 549. The Ecoquest Breeze AT is another unique air purifier from Ecoquest. It is a lot like the Fresh Air in results, but is older technology and has less bells and whistles. It uses Active technology which means the purifier actually reaches beyond the unit and cleans the air. The Breeze AT is effective and can clean up to 2500 sqft. This purifier is cost effective to maintain, but does take periodic cleaning to keep working in top form. 2nd best home air purifier for the whole house. Read full review for more details: Click Here for full review.

3rd Place: Ecoquest Ecobox – Excellent Rating

MSRP 349. The Ecoquest Ecobox is the newest air purifier from Ecoquest. It is a lot like the Fresh Air, but on a smaller scale. It uses Active technology which means the purifier actually reaches beyond the unit and cleans the air. This purifier is effective and can clean up to 1500 sqft. Generally I would recommend it for a small home, smaller apartment, or dorm room. Larger homes can use it as an extension of a Fresh Air or for the basement. The Ecobox is cost effective to maintain, but does take periodic cleaning to keep working in top form. 3rd best home air purifier for the whole house. Read full review for more details: Click Here for full review.

4th Place: Ecoquest Ductworx – Excellent Rating

MSRP 395. The Ductworx is a great idea with a few challenges. The challenges occur when using the HVAC. Challenge #1 is that no particle removal is done by Ductworx. Because the HVAC ducts are metal, ionization does not work. Challenge #2 is that most HVAC systems run only part of the time. To combat these challenges, it is recommended that the Ductworx be used in conjunction with another particle removing purifier and that a slow speed control be added to the HVAC that runs the HVAC fan at a low speed conserving energy, but distributing the cleaning power regularly. The Ductworx is effective and can clean up to 2000 sqft. Schools and daycares have started to use this product. 4th best home air purifier for the whole house. 5th Place: Air Oasis 9″ Induct ACT UV– Excellent Rating

MSRP 549.99. The 9″ Induct ACT is a good idea with a few challenges. The challenges occur when using the HVAC. Challenge #1 is that no particle removal is done by Induct ACT. Because the HVAC ducts are metal, ionization does not work. Challenge #2 is that most HVAC systems run only part of the time. To combat these challenges, it is recommended that the Induct ACT be used in conjunction with another particle removing purifier and that a slow speed control be added to the HVAC that runs the HVAC fan at a low speed conserving energy, but distributing the cleaning power regularly. Some installation is required. 5th best home air purifier for the whole house. Read full review for more details: Click Here for full review.

6th Place: Air Oasis 3000 UV – Excellent Rating

MSRP 499.99. I like the rugged, simple design of this purifier. The quality is evident and the materials are good (very little plastic). It has good cleaning ability for smells, gases, VOCs, and basic microorganisms. Not as effective on particle removal. Low maintenance and low maintenance costs are also pluses. I would consider this purifier for larger spaces that are not too dusty or where the focus is on smells, gases, VOCs, and basic microorganisms. 6th best home air purifier for the whole house. Read full review for more details: Click Here for full review.

7th Place: Air Oasis 3000XTREME UV – Excellent Rating

MSRP 549.99. Again, I like the rugged, simple design of this purifier. The quality is evident and the materials are good (very little plastic). It has decent cleaning ability for smells, gases, VOCs, and basic microorganisms. Not as effective on particle removal. Low maintenance and low maintenance costs are also pluses. I would consider this purifier for larger spaces that are not too dusty or where the focus is on smells, gases, VOCs, and basic microorganisms. 7th best home air purifier for the whole house. Read full review for more details: Click Here for full review.

8th Place: Shaklee AirSource 3000 – Very Good Rating MSRP 699.

The result is a cleaning action that actively emits from the purifier into the room to reduce odors, gases, VOCs, and microorganisms.  RGF was involved in the design of this purifier. Read full review for more details: Click Here for full review.

9th Place: Biozone Scientific Induct 1500 – Very Good Rating

MSRP 299.99. The Induct 1500 is the smallest of the HVAC purifiers offered by Biozone. It provides decent odor and gas elimination, but has two major limitations. The first is that most HVAC systems only run some of the time. The second is this purifier does not remove particles. It is an incomplete cleaning solution. If it was an add-on to another particle removing technology it would be sufficient. A super low-speed fan setting (additional component; did not see offered by company) on the HVAC would also help with year round cleaning. Read full review for more details: Click Here for full review.

10th Place: Biozone Scientific PureHome 3000 – Good Rating

MSRP 319.99. Ok for odors and gases, questionable for rest. This purifier would be effective for spaces up to 750 sqft which may be suitable for smaller homes or apartments.
