OVERVIEW: Before I start this Aerus Electrolux Air Purifier Review I’ll start by saying that I recognize this unit as the same model sold for 75% less here. This is air cleaner is built for particle removal, and they try to do it right. It’s fairly big, and if I have a particle problem like dust or allergies it works well.

Although it is high-quality it is also high priced. It leaves me wondering if:

1 Is the high price because they are made in Sweden? (most are made in China for lower costs).

2 Did they model it after the Swedish IQAIR Purifier Company (the top high-priced, high-quality air purifier on the market?)

It won’t help much with germs, odors, viruses, or bacteria. This is the tradeoff many companies make – remove dust and pollen and skip ultraviolet and other germ/virus technology to keep prices low.

The motor is an older brush style. Todays brushless motors are much more efficient with energy, quieter, and last longer. But this one seems solidly made. This review of the 501 will be followed by video reviews on the other models I have.

While I have no issue with in home selling, or the Eletrolux name, the added on Air Purifier is a very, very profitable item. I review the unit itself but here’s a link to the same model for 75% less.

The price is a bit high

This model is good for particle removal (dust and pollen) but won’t help much with germs, odors, viruses, or bacteria. This is the tradeoff many companies make – remove dust and pollen and skip ultraviolet and other germ/virus technology to keep prices low.

1 – A big HEPA and Carbon filter

4 – Quiet on Low Speed (but the quiet speed is not very effective). Loud on high due to an older style brush motor.

1 – Not a real or what’s called “true” Hepa filter – it’s ‘Hepa-like”

2 – The absence of a pre-filter, means shorter filter life (6 months) as a result – more expensive than most HEPA’s to operate

3 – The seating of the filters inside the housing is not very tight. This might allow some air to by-pass the filter reducing the air cleaning efficiency, However the 3 filters probably offsets this.

4 – Does not kill viruses, bacteria or mold/mildew. The odor ability is less than desired, although the electrostatic probably covers odor.

5 – Very Expensive

My RESPONSE

First off – unless your house is one big room then this will not clean the whole house. When you said full house I thought you were talking about an A/C duct air purification system (which by the way don’t work very well).

The problem – air circulates. So if there are doors an air purifier in one room will not do a good job through doorways. No matter how many square feet, how large, powerful, etc. Unfortnately you’re better off witha small air purifier in small rooms and a large in large.

Try some of the more affordable air purifiers listed.

Plus… for a high powered electrostatic that claims to be better than HEPA? Don’t expect it to collect more dust or pollen that a HEPA. It won’t. Plus the 2,000 square feet is not based on “through the machine” it is based on ions or Ozone.

If this product truly has all of the purifying technology available in a portable unit? That’s amazing…but $3000 amazing?

So we had a guy come to our house and he did a in home showing when he first put the air purifier in our bedroom and we had closed the door for one hour went back in there yes it did smell different what had did it for me was the vacuum the vacuum is great but these air purifiers do not work they are not worth the $3,000 that we have spent I have been trying to get ahold of them because I do not want them they are not worth the money that they say they are or electric bill has gone up $100 a month since we have gotten these and I know this because we’ve had everything else checked in our house we’ve got a new windows do doors everything is insulated I am not satisfied whatsoever I am waiting on a phone call back because I cannot find the phone number to call them very unsatisfied customer

Is there anything you can prove to show that this machine would not do 2000 sq feet? Ok how is it possible that one central unit can cool a whole house in an hour, I’ll give you an example the air intake. So if this machine is able to intake 2000 square feet per hour wouldn’t you think it would be able to clean 2000 square feet per hour.

The Amway Atmosphere Air Purifier can be obtained from Amway.

As an alternative I recommend considering the COWAY AP-1512HH Mighty Air Purifier as a worthy replacement.

  A: Hi Jim. Way back in 1981 (college) I was briefly involved in Amway – and given my interest in air purifiers I tried to sell the Amway model, although the Amway one I sold wasn’t called the Amway Atmosphere Air Purifier at that time if my memory serves me. 
  
  After reading this review, if you’d like a comparison go to the Comparison Chart via the left or right menu. I have read all the specs on the Amway (see below) but I have not had my hands on one to take it apart or do a video review of it. I am going by specs, price and online reviews in this review.

  My first impression is that given it’s 390 square feet and price tag it’s pricey for what you get. You could get three superior models for that price. It’s good that it has HEPA and Carbon – perhaps the two most important filters there are.

Conclusion
My conclusion is that the Amway may be a good unit, but very overpriced for it’s size and square footage. An affordable alternate can be found here.

Atmosphere by Access Business Group

The Atmosphere® Air Purifier is sold through in the United States and Canada through retailer the Quixtar and by Amway — a pyramid direct marketing organization which has independent distributors — in international markets. The Atmosphere unit is manufactured by Access Business Group, owned by Alticor which also owns Amway and Quixtar, and has 10 plants in the U.S., some of which have been in operation since 1934.

Atmosphere Recognition

Released in 2005, the Atmosphere Air Purifier was the first air cleaner certified as asthma and allergy friendly in 2009 by the partnership of the Asthma and Allergy Foundation of America (AAFA) and the Allergy Standards Limited (ASL), an international research organization. Quixtar also donated an Atmosphere Air Purifier to the reality show “Extreme Home Make-Over” for the Thompson Family episode.

Filtration Claims

Atmosphere advertising claims it is “better than HEPA” but there is no supporting evidence since it only meets the performance standards of an AHAM AC-1 air cleaner that eliminates up to 99.99% of particles down to 0.01 microns.  Technically there is no commercial filtration system that is better than HEPA.  The unit has also been awarded a U.S. Department of Energy Energy Star® rating. The Quixtar web site also claims that the Atmosphere Air Purifier was “ranked among the best air purification systems” in a December 2007 issue of “a leading US consumer magazine” although no references are provided to the magazine or the study.

Pricing Info and Availability

The Amway/Quixtar air purifier price fluctuates, but it typically retails for between $600 and $860, although in some markets where there is limited competition it is considerably higher. Replacement filters are available only through authorized dealers and also have a wide price range that averages around $150 for the HEPA, $80 for the carbon and can cost up to $500 a year to maintain both filters if run regularly as suggested by the manufacturer. Since Atmosphere Air Purifiers are sold through independent agents, it is often difficult to get after-the-sale support, parts and fulfillment of warranty obligations.

Available in only one model, the Atmosphere unit cleans a room up to 390 square feet and offers a programmable timer with five settings that can be operated via a remote control. The panel includes a clean air indicator and a turbo button for a short term boost. Contaminants claimed to be removed by the Atmosphere Air Purifier:

Filtration Technology

The model includes three barrier filters but no ultra violet (UV) unit:

• Pre-filter – This glass-filled polypropylene filter can be cleaned every 2 to 12 months depending on usage with a vacuum or by rinsing with water.
• Carbon filter – To reduces odor and traps bacteria and fungal spores, this carbon filter contains 19,000 grams of activated carbon and lasts between 4 to 12 months, depending on usage.
• HEPA filter – Traps 99.99% of airborne particles as small as 0.01 microns and needs to be replaced every 3 to 60 months, dependant not only upon usage but also the particles sensor readings.

The air filtering volume varies depending on the setting:

• Whisper setting – 50 cubic feet per minute at 4 W
• Low setting – 100 cubic feet per minute at 9 W
• Medium setting -150 cubic feet per minute at 18 W
• High setting – 200 cubic feet per minute at 34 W
• Turbo setting – 250 cubic feet per minute at 59 W

The Pureflow design reduces fan noise since it only operates when needed, a feature that is responsible for the unit’s EnergyStar rating. The turbo power function allows you to clean up to 390 square feet within 20 minutes.
